Dean Saunders won 5 Welsh caps while he was at United.
And wasn't bad for us either.

The criteria should be 'an international whilst playing for us, who you've seen play'. Although it narrows it down a bit.

Just remembered Carney for Australia but I'd rather have forgotten him

Good recall
Hodgekinson
Joe Shaw
Walker. Powell. Jagielka. Graham Shaw
Woodward. Currie. Jimmy Hagan
Deane. Mick Jones

Subs. Kelly, Eddie Ballooon, Sabella, Hockey , Reece , Cahill, Colin Grainger

When I was a young boy we used to play a sweeper system behind the back four. At that time it was called the bolt system. It was effective as the two Shaws, who were both brilliant, were in the team. Joe Shaw never actually played for England but he did play for the football league team I think. He was kept out of the national side by Billy Wright, who in my opinion wasn't as good as Joe, but then I am biased I suppose. Woodward also never played for England, I don't believe, what a travesty that was.

Since this weekend's game is being abandoned due to Walsall's international call-ups, I thought I would have a stab at our best ever 11 who have played an international game. Some of these players are well before my time so debate is welcome!

Alan Kelly
Jags McGrath Colquhoun
Borbokis Nilsen

Currie V.Jones Ndlovu

Deane Flo

Subs: Hodgkinson, N.Blake, A. Quinn, Trianos Dellas, C. Evans

Alex Forbes, Len Badger, Bill Toner ?

My Best Blades international XI (that I've seen play for United - my first Blades game 1975)

A Kelly (RoI)
Borbokis (Gre) - Colquhoun (Sco) - Murphy (Aus) - Naysmith (Sco)
K Gillespie (NI) - Currie (Eng) - Hodges (Wal) - Nuddy (Zim)
Deane (Eng) - C Evans (Wal)

Subs: Kenny (RoI), Page (Wal), A Quinn (RoI), Peschi (Can), Kazim-Richards (Tur), Saunders (Wal)

In reply to the post about Dellas, he was never fully capped while at United, though won a few at U21 level. I'd argue our most successful international (on pots won) was Patrick Suffo, Olympic Gold medal winner, African Cup of Nations winners medal (both won while at United) and one of only 2 United players to represent their country at a World Cup finals tournament.

Dellas it is, our most successful International player ever. only player to ever score a silver goal in an International match. A great example of how there is the possibility of talent in everyone, as I remember when first saw him play for us he was the definition of the person most unlikely to be a successful footballer if you picked a random selection of 200 from the crowd (including young children and a pigeon).

The cross bar that had to be taken down and replaced (and incidentally still resides in a cross bar rest home) following being hit by a Dellas thunderbolt will testify that it was certainly shocked and surprised at his ability. The crossbar sends its regards and says that it expects the vibrations to cease in a couple of years.

I assume it's just an error that you've forgotten Jags.

My Best U23/U21 international XI (that I've seen at United)

Naughton (Eng u21) - Maguire (Eng u21) - Dellas (Gre u21) - Woodhouse (Eng u21)
Tonge (Eng u21) - Jags (Eng u21) - S Quinn (RoI u21) - Beagrie (Eng u21)
C Evans (Wal u21) - Suffo (Cam u23)

No McGrath?

Anybody who saw McGrath having a fag and chatting to the keeper before sauntering out to nullify an opposition attack will understand why he was so well regarded.

In all my years I have never seen anything as classy (football wise) as McGrath other than Joe Shaw. Seen em all. Hard bastards, dirty bastards, clever bastards, sweepers, Beckenbauers, them that plays in a two, a three, a four, a five and them that just want a feight. He only played a few games but bloody hell, that was a one man defence.
