Was it you that posted at the time that you'd never forgive him for that if we went down with a slender margin? I recall someone did (not on here, on BM) and it's always stuck in my mind.Been going since 1978..
Toss of a coin between Alan Kelly and Simon Tracey..
With a mention for Mel Rees.. I shed a few at his passing..
A few have mentioned Paddy .. not for me.... spent too much time posing for the TV cameras... I remember him costing us a win against Everton.. all he had to do was catch the ball.. instead he tapped it over the forwards head, went too far and he brought down somebody outside the box.. they scored from the free kick.. if anybody says "look how many points he got us with his saves....."... that's his job!!!.... and I haven't forgiven him for gonna QPR after the club stood by him after his ban
No mate.. wasn't me.....Was it you that posted at the time that you'd never forgive him for that if we went down with a slender margin? I recall someone did (not on here, on BM) and it's always stuck in my mind.
Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg were groovy beat goalkeepers, but obviously not in the same class as Albert Camus, the greatest absurdist footballer of all time in any position.
I'll ask Eva what she thinks.
Yep, me too. Fuck Rodney Marsh.
Entertainment value! That's mainly it.We've been well served in the goalkeeper stakes since I started going in the early 60's:
Hodgy, Tom Mc, Jimmy Brown, Tracey, Kelly, Rees, Kenny.
Can't believe Burridge gets any sort of mention on a best keeper thread.
John Hope surely
In my opinion the best goalkeeper has to be Alan Kelly. I still remember his penalty shootout saves against Coventry in the FA cup. He was the best but Tracey ran him a close second. I also seem to recall that jags was a good outfield option as arsenal can testify again in the FA cup if I'm not mistaken?. Utb
1 Mcallister
2 Tracey
3 Kenny
Best performance
1 Brown at Newcastle
2 Rees v Liverpool
3 Kelly v Coventry
You can't have seen Mel Rees at Everton, Sitters. The finest goalkeeping performance I have ever seen. Still can't believe he only played 9 games for us!!
Agree with most of that. I'm not sure many complained about Hodgy's size, though it was commented on. Goalkeepers were not the giants they are now; his rivals for England, such as Hopkinson and Springett, were not big. There was an assumption that big equalled clumsy, and goalies like Hodgy practised gymnastics. I recall that when Corrigan, who was tall, first played, he was a figure of fun; he worked hard to overcome that reputation.I only saw the end of Hodgys career but he was good, very good. Very athletic. But I remember the fatha's of some of you moaning gits on here saying "he's too small". Go on, ask yer dad if Ihe said it? Cos some of your fatha's did - and regularly.
So then we got Big John Hope - who made them cream their pants because he was so tall! And he was brilliant at first and even got called up for England! Then we saw some weaknesses in him. He hated crosses more than Dracula, couldn't catch a pig in a gennel and was a nervous wreck.
McAllister was excellent for a while. Steve Conroy was good and so was Ian Tomlinson.
Keith Waugh was a good keeper. So was "Budgie" Burridge. Mel Rees looked brilliant but we only ever saw a glimpse of him - poor lad RIP.
Fans were divided over who was the best keeper between Kelly and Tracey. Both were very good at that time but Kelly was the best one for me. More consistent and less likely to do erratic things.
I actually think Paddy Kenny is on of the very best we've had. I know that won't be a popular choice but he was very good at his peak. (Before he got his eyebrow bitten off in a feight in Halifax. Never the same after that when the sun was shining).
Overall I'd have to say Alan Kelly - but only because I saw him at his best which I didn't for Hodgy. And I suspect Hodgy was actually the best amongst those who saw more of him than me?
Always remember after a great save the Kop singing "England's Englandsnumber 2".
Changed for the following game.
9 games, and a Blades Legend. His appearance at Wembley, and the reception he got from everywhere in the ground is one of my greatest, and saddest, United memories. Still brings a lump to the throat.
