O'Toole interest remains

According to The Star this morning it appears that we haven't given up our interest in Watford midfielder John Joe O'Toole.

In my opinion, I think this would be a very good signing. His best game for us in my view was when we beat Derby 4-2 at the Lane, that day he made some excellent tackles in the middle of the park and linked up well going forwards. I think that there is potential in him to become a better player, also add the fact that his scoring record for Watford isn't bad at all (8 in 14 starts last season), so the lad has goals in him.

Also, Leigh Bromby appears to be re-signing for £400,000. I think this is another good signing and provides solid cover.

SHEFFIELD United have not written off their interest in midfielder John-Joe O'Toole even though he has returned to Watford.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international arrived on loan at Bramall Lane in January and a deal was set up at the time to turn it into a permanent move if the Blades reached the Premier League.

O'Toole became a regular in United's matchday sqADVERTISEMENTuad and either started or was a substitute in a dozen matches, scoring once, in the 2-1 home win over Barnsley.

However, the midfielder damaged ankle ligaments at the end of the season and that ruled him out of the three play-off matches.

With United failing in their Premier League quest, the 'permanent' clause in the agreement between the clubs did not automatically kick in and United allowed O'Toole to return to Watford without pursuing the matter.

However, the Blades may well review the situation as manager Kevin Blackwell takes stock of the players he has let go and those he is left with while assessing his midfield targets.

One move that is set to go through between the clubs is Leigh Bromby's switch from loan to permanent.

He was the first signing in the January transfer window, when Blackwell brought him back to the Lane with an agreement for it to be made permanent at the end of the season.

It is thought that Watford will receive around £400,000 for the versatile defender. It would have been a higher figure had United been promoted.

Leeds chairman Ken Bates says they have had no offers for Jermaine Beckford, despite reported interest from the Blades.

Bates said they were "in no hurry".

He added: "Jermaine is with us until June 2010 and if we don't get what we consider to be a reasonable offer we will keep him."

Bates wants to sign Owls striker Akpo Sodje's brother, Sam, after his release by Reading.

I thought O'toole was alrite more productive than both SQuinn and Howard.

At the age of 20 aswell, why not?

i thought o,toole was quite good,when he got on the pitch,a bit more robust than quinny,he did,nt seem to get muscled out of the game as much,a bit gangly and somewhat clumsy at times,but i cant knock the lad for effort and passion.reminded me of peter crouch when he came to the lane with qpr when he was a young,un.and look what he acheived.

If he comes he could dislodge Quinn, and that would not be a bad thing.

He'd definitely put more pressure on both Howard and Quinn to step up their game, and if they can't handle the pressure, then I think O'Toole would be a fitting replacement, and an all round good addition to the squad.

I think O'Toole is another one in the "has potential" pile... but we really need someone with experience to put their boot on it and pass it around in the middle of the park to create things.

We need a Stuart McCall/Gary Speed style player.
