1 more year as player/striker coach. Play Billy in the cup games and when we are struggling with injuries. He would still be very valuable, but wages will be an issue.

Only way I can see him staying is if our new owners chuck megga wonga at the club and then we can probably afford that expense.

I'd sooner Billy had another year rather than the headless chicken if rumours are to be believed.

Knowing how little game time he’d have he’d probably accept £10,000 a week? £500,000 a year? Surely that’s worth it for what he brings to the dressing room.

If motivational speakers get that much a year then jesus christ. In reality that money should be going to an Ndiaye extension offer

For someone my age, Sharp will always be the best club legend I got the chance to watch (then again I am choosing from the likes of Morgan and Monty so not sure it's a terribly high bar!)
As much as I want to keep him just because it's Sharp - we can't. We need to spend and the money saved on him could bring in someone who could score the goals he can't for us. I think his time has been and gone, and now we should get started on the statue and renaming a stand for him

Assuming you mean McBurnie - which I don't get as he was one of our better players this season?

Think some people dislike him and Brewster because they immediately associate them with relegation/The Prince/Wilder not being here (delete as appropriate) so have an instant dislike to them

It's clear he wants to stay, but what are his wage demands?

It's also a good time to remind people that last time out at Bournemouth he came in and got the equaliser which got us up and running, I know it was years ago but many said he was shot before that season.. That type of goal he could still score this upcoming season, anything loose in the box, I'd have money on him.

Another thing, Brewster is still injured, Osula is a raw diamond, Jebbeson needs a full season, he's not the finished article and a long way off as a starter in the PL, Mcburnie is not prolific or consistent and gets injured too he's a great CF and a defenders nightmare, but not lethal..

Whereas Sharp doesn't get injured as much and can pose a threat in the box, also knows how to win the odd pen or two.. Great for a cheap deal to come on and save legs in the last 10, but does Sharp want basic wages or pay as you play? His agent will have a club lined up, he'd be a cheat code at Wrexham and would help fill that new stand.

My thoughts.

1 season on 5k* a week plus goal bonus & win bonus, dare I say survival bonus!

Use him as back up, cup games, or bring him on and save a few tired legs when we're getting a hiding off Liverpool or City, good for morale in the squad.

*He's clearly banked a couple of million so it wouldn't be about wages surely, but 5k a week is still ridiculous money, only insane football wages make it look like nothing when it's great in reality for a 37 year olds swan song.

The club shouldn't be looking at what he can't do, more at what he still can do, we get an injury early on, the board will be kicking themselves..

As much as I was welling up last night I have voted no as a player.

If it had been in some sort of bench player / two or three appearances / learning the coaching ropes I might have said yes.

That team was better than this unfortunately. Great clip.

Personally I liked Goldy's goal the best and what a joy to see Fleck rampaging.
I actually think this one is better individually. But collectively the team under Wilder was a stronger unit, but not much in it. I think the team spirit is just as good as then though and that's so important. Norwood was the best centre mid in the division in my view, I'd never seen anyone for us play as well as he did in centre mid, maybe Stuart McCall was close. I hope with a decent summer that next season we'll be better than the team under Wilder. A huge awaits!

Do we know what the situation is, or is it all still rumours? I thought he had definitely not been offered a new playing contract. Is there still a chance that he could be given a shirt number?

I was going to ask the same - AFAIK there has been nothing official from the club at all on this or the situation of the other out of contract players. But not being in Sheffield its sometimes difficult to tell whether something is known (ie: at least being reported as fact in local media) or 'known' (ie: somebody knows somebody whose wife heard it from their cousin).

Renew on a low wage then give him a 6 month loan somewhere he'll play and get some form then we can reassess in January

Its sadly a No from me, but, only as a player!
Id love to see him become an academy coach next season, with a view to being a first team coach later.
Full respect for what Bill has done at Utd, but, we can't stand still, even if the Prince seems be trying to pull us down currently!!

All the best, whatever you decide to do Bill, and THANK YOU for the memories!!

Interesting to read heckys comments about going to Geneva, given some bad news to players and good news for others but discussions not over yet and will continue

I loved watching that. For all the passion running through the club you can see what it means to him.

As others have said, if he would become part of the staff I don't think anyone would turn him down but sadly time has caught up and he won't be competitive enough next season. Everyone knows it, himself included and its a very difficult goodbye if he's set on another season playing.

The lad has nothing to prove, he's been instrumental pretty much every season he's worn a Blades shirt. If he doesn't get a statue, he deserves a stand at the least.

His equaliser at Bournemouth was my vote for our best Prem goal in our first season. It was a simple tap in but in a league where pretty much everyone expected us to immediately fail his goal showed all the clubs we were there to have a go and it sparked easily the best season I've ever seen by the Blades.

No matter where he goes he's always going to be part of the club and I've no doubt once he comes to terms with his own mortality he'll be back at the club somehow.

As fantastic as Sharp has been for Utd, especially being a supporter, it's obvious from his performances and goal return this season that time has finally caught up with him.
If Utd were going to spend next season in the Champ then there would have been a stronger case to offer him another year. However, with the club in the Prem and his contribution likely to be none-minimal, it's right that the club made the decision that's being reported and emotion, rightly, did not come into it.
While it would have been nice to bid him farewell at BDTBL, last night was the next best option.
If he does go elsewhere, I don't think anyone would be surprised if he returned as a coach or even manager at some point in the future.

At this level, at least. Absolutely convinced he could still do a job at L1, maybe at L2 he'd have an outside shot at pushing on to 300

If we hadn't been promoted then maybe yes, but I think over the course of this season he's deteriorated. Would love to see him stay at the club, but can't see it as a player.

Gutted, but the club as a whole needs to be put before 1 man.

Hi Stegosaurus here,

Nope. Sharp will be a liability in the Prem. Imagine him coming on as a sub, and chasing a long ball at his now glacier-like pace which Brewster or McBurnie may have got on the end of. Granted, it's doubtful McBurnie or Brewster would do anything with it anyway, but still.

Give him a coaching role or something.
Go away pig!

it was heartbreaking to watch & it really stayed with me, its sounds odd but i felt like i was watching a statesman deliver this iconic speech.

but i think billy will regret not bowing out at the top if he goes on for 1 more year as realistically he wont play. but the old adage which is very true very few sportsman know when its time. its because we love him we know when he needs to walk away

His last visit to the prem and the SCENES when he scored at Bournemouth. One of many perfect memories. Time for other players to have those moments.

Thought this was a thread about the pigs stay in league one ! After tonight we can only hope so !
