Then do we give him another year next summer as well?
It’s time
exactly - personally if we hadnt gone up I would have considered one more year, as I feel at Championship level he can do a job
But up against some of the best defenders in the world he will get mopped up
Imagine if your Stones, VVD, Silva, Varane etc and you see a 37/38 yr old Billy coming on...........

We will be pressed back a lot next season, we need an outlet and someone with pace, I dont this we will get the penetration often enough to use a 'fox in the box' type player.

i hope either he stays as a coach, or if he wants game time he goes somewhere like Rotherham or Barnsley and bags a few goals, then comes back as a coach

Would love him to stay on in a coaching role but presume he still wants to play.

Legend.

He wasn't up to the championship last season, so he's certainly not going to be up to the PL. We could offer him a youth team coaching role (whilst perhaps maintaining his player registration on the understanding he'd only play in the direst of injury crisis) but with a salary commensurate with someone at that level with no coaching experience. But he might not take that when he perhaps earn more in League Two as a player.

Or why not arrange a pre season friendly with a prestigious foreign club as his testimonial with all monies to a charity of his choice. There'd be a big turn out I think.

Would love for him to stay on for one more year but sadly I can't see it happening.

Money no problem then absolutely! But he needs to be very aware that his game time could end up being v.limited potentially. But then again who knows might make more sub apps than you think too, he was coming into form just before pandemic hit. But that's 3 years ago now.

Think the issue is as well, money is tight so unless he's gonna play for nearly nowt then guessing Hecky and directors are thinking we could get another player in who might contribute more on the pitch.

His off the pitch stuff though is worth it's weight in gold though too, but are we saying without Billy dressing room turns to shit? Still gonna have the likes of Bash next season, Egan, Norwood (At a guess) Baldock even McBurnie too.

But after all this personally If we could negotiate a low enough wage I'd deffo like to see him for another year!

Do players have testimonials anymore?
Last United player I remember getting one was Chris Morgan against Newcastle in a pre season game under Adkins. Think Basham needs one more year to qualify for a testimonial match. Billy might be eligible for one because he's been on our books for more than ten years if you count his previous seasons.

They both deserve one.

I've voted no, unless he "plays" for absolute peanuts.

Alternatively a coaches wage and he's doing coaching as well as being a leader in the dressing room.

P.S. Total legend and hero. I love Billy.

Definitely. I don't know if testimonial matches means you have to be involved with the club for ten consecutive years or just ten years with breaks/absences in between. Sometimes players have their testimonials years after they retire tho.

That was amazing, Morgs' knee was still fucked so he couldn't actually play the game could he, they brought him on for the last few minutes when we had a free kick in a dangerous positiion and he went straight across to take it, it was written in the stars for him to curl one into the top corner.......but no he blasted it straight into the wall!

I also remember as he got subbed on the ref walked straight over and showed him a red card which was pretty funny.

Don't make a decision after watching the video leave it 48 hours and then decide

Sad to See Billy go and sad to see him last night with his heart on his sleave, but the memories will be forever and Billy will always be a legend.
If Chezzie win their playoff final tomorrow, would be a great signing for them, close to home and would certainly get Chezzie up again next season..

It's a no from me. If we were heading out of the championship in the other direction I'd say yes, but he's not remotely close to what we need in the top flight.

The other thing to consider here for giving Sharp another year is that there are squad limits in the PL. Do we want to use one of those limited spots on Sharp when he's pretty much going to just be getting single digit minutes in games?

If he stayed, I don’t think it would cause resentment but I think it would annoy some of our supporters. He’s not good enough now for the Premiership, that much is a given. If he’s then paid say £1 million next year to be ineffective on very limited appearance time then it’s a no from me. We need to be ruthless now, and I don’t want Billy’s legacy to be dampened by giving him another playing contract,

Of all the 'old uns, sadly I think Billy is the one I would be first to offer a golden handshake. I think he is performing better than Fleck and Stevens for sure. But it's just the position, I think it's easier to get a good value for a 4- 5th choice striker
Hes got the experience, he can still be useful in cup games, or off the bench when we are chasing a goal and he will be a standard setter on the training ground. But if we are interested in Pukki for example.... or Jebbo and Osula may offer more as a staring option. On the coaching role, well I think he still has a lot to offer as a player elsewhere, I can still see him scoring in the Champ and certainly lower in the right set up...I think I'd like to see him out there breaking records.

He’ll be back in some capacity in the future
Don’t blame him wanting to keep playing for a short while & im sure he’ll bag his 250th & few more .
Now dry your eyes ppl & stop being so melodramatic

If he's dropping down to that level surely he'd rather go back to Rovers for one last promotion push there. I know a few Donny fans and he has club legend status there not far off how he's spoken about here.

Plus his mate Coppinger is their director of football now

He won’t be and that’s the point !

It's another shit show by United in my opinion, both club and Sharp should have sorted this out before the season ended. If he was not to be offered another year, then he should have been given the appropriate send off in a packed Bramall Lane last home game. One befitting the legend that he is, not just dragged on then given the mic on the town hall steps when he still doesn't know what's happening. It should have been done like when Totti finished at Roma. I'm gutted for him, he deserved the whole ground singing his name and a proper presentation on the pitch for all he has achieved and given us. Thanks Billy what a player and top bloke you are, I'm sure we will see you back in some capacity.

I really want him to stay on but at 37 sadly I don't think he'll be able to command a place in the squad now over a new younger player who can offer genuine competition to the others. I don't know if Billy is ready for a coaching role/whether that's on offer but it is a real shame if he does go. Everyone has to call it a day at some point, he's in a select group of two in my time following United in terms of rapport with the fans/a genuine supporter of the club, the other Dane Whitehouse. You can name other Blades to play for the club but Billy and Whitehouse but in my view, not with the rapport those two had/ve.

I was genuinely welling up myself when watching it and I didn't do that yesterday but I couldn't see the emotion as much as just now. Yesterday I was fortunate to get eye contact with Billy as I was on the first floor of a multi storey car park (above where Berlins used to be!) most others were on the ground and he looked at me and I gave him a clap and he did the same back for what seemed like an eternity. Only a tiny thing but for me I'll never forget that. A proper legend and without a doubt should have a statue of him in the car park, maybe next to Whitehouse even though they never played in the same team.

My favourite Billy Sharp memory on the pitch was those two goals he got v Blackburn in the promotion season. The kop just erupted when that first went in, with his weaker left foot too, a great strike in a match that we thought we were set to lose until Blackburn were also reduced to ten men. As a player, a brilliant centre forward who I wish we'd never sold on either of the first two occasions, he was unlucky that when he did get to the PL with us he was 33 because had he been 26 I think he could have been good enough for that level. I just hope he gets a testimonial as I think he deserves that.

That team was better than this unfortunately. Great clip.

Personally I liked Goldy's goal the best and what a joy to see Fleck rampaging.

How the hell did Bash get a 2nd yellow for that 🤣

If we are as skint as many people allegedly claim we are, we're not going to be close to signing enough new players to fill out that squad limit

So the crowd chanted “one more year!” I probably agree to be fair. Although the goals have dried up a little he’s actually played well this year when called upon.

People say sentimentality shouldn’t come into it. Why not? It’s football. Personally I’d like to say my goodbyes to him on the pitch rather than on the town hall balcony.

Knowing how little game time he’d have he’d probably accept £10,000 a week? £500,000 a year? Surely that’s worth it for what he brings to the dressing room.

So the vote is simple. One last year and we get a full season to say our goodbyes or no thanks, not for me.
Accept 10k per week? He'll be lucky to get half that at Rotherham or Donny.
Must be difficult for Billy, he clearly loves United but probably will want much more game time.
Best for both parties if he moves on and maybe come back in a coaching role eventually.
