One goal wonders

I was trying to find the exact attendance for this game online but couldn't find it . I do have a book somewhere that will have the crowd in. If it was around the 8,000 mark ( which we got regular around then ) then the 8,000 or so saw an all time great goal. Definitely in my top 20 Blades goal of all time.

Having checked, the crowd was 7,762. That was the last of 5 straight games - 4 won 1 drawn - where we had crowds of less than 10,000, including the post-war low of 6,647 v Palace.

Our average home crowd that season was 9,992 - the only time since 1897 that we have averaged less than 5 figures.

Jim Brown did it for Chesterfield against Stockport. He also scored for Washington Diplomats. Afraid I cant think of any of our keepers scoring for us

When United played a touring black South African team (known in those unreconstructed days as "Kaffirs") in 1899 Fatty Foulke made a couple of jaunts up front and scored a couple of goals.

From what I can remember the tour was all about "look black people! and they can kick a football!" and one suspects that their football skills were not of the highest. I believe United won the game 7-2.

Many people these days were insular. A friend who is now 77 told me that when he was very young his dad took him on a "day out" to see a black man at Spital Hill selling newspapers and there were many people stood there looking at him as if it was a zoo!

If you google Orange Free State football team tour of Europe 1899 you will find a very interesting article on the tour (it's a pdf so I can't link it). They played 49 games and were subject to "racism, ridicule and humiliation" apparently. It was quite common for their opponents to send the goalie up front and play with no-one in goal, hence Fatty's 2 goals.

There's no mention of the United game in the article, but a good read none the less.

Please if anybody has the Andy Kennedy goal get it posted on here. If my memory is correct he broke loose from our own half with the Blackburn team in his wake and then chipped the approaching keeper from the edge of the box. What a goal. He then just stood facing the kop with his arms outstretched in celebration. Back in the days where we barely averaged 13,000 gates, the goal deserved a better time and crowd.
I was there for that, used to stand down near the bottom of the kop back then, with my Dad 15-20 yards back. I remember the goal vividly, and Kennedy stood right in front of kop next to the fencing after he scored and I tried to climb up the fences and grab his shirt!

Don't know if it has been mentioned and please correct me if I am wrong, Christian Nade scored three goals but I think only one league goal against Arsenal, what a great goal/ night that was (surely that counts as one goal wonderer). That's one of the few memories I like to keep about that season, the other being throwing away a 7 point gap and getting relegated.

When we got relegated to the 4th Division the elderly father of Bert's mate declared "What we need is some good cheap Blackies".

He also scored in the 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle on 7/4/07.

I stand corrected, I thought seemed a bit strange no one had mentioned him! That's obviously the reason why.

His 3rd goal was also a league goal - the consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Reading.

Never trust Wikipedia! I clearly didn't understand the concept of this 'One goal wonders' thread, maybe I need to start a Christian Nade's greatest goals thread ...........
