The title of this thread brings back the frustration of Warnock wasting the January transfer window on signing Matt Kilgallon, Ahmed Fahti and Mamadou Seck as "ones for the future" the hilarious part being that Seck was 28 at the time.

In fact most of that transfer window was a complete waste as Luton Shelton turned out to be complete bob. Only Jon Stead seemed to play or make any kind of impact unless I'm missing someone more obvious.

Thankfully, Wilder, as he has said many times before, treats the budget like his own money, worlds apart from Warnock.

I wasn’t intended to be another excuse for a Warnock-bashing thread.

At one time, United used to wheel out young kids on a Matchday and announced them over the tannoy as another “One for the future”.

Most were never heard of again. The title was a reference to that if anything.

He can maybe take some credit but we will have scouts out looking for young players who have lost there way .plenty of talent around if you look in the right places.
Hungry young players with talent , nothing to lose really , most will probably fade away but the odd Brooks & Jags can be found this way.

He went on to win his first 4 games in charge and we finished 16th in that 1999/2000 season, when we had defiantly been on our way down before he came,
We never looked like a relegation team again while he was manager until 2006/ 07 in the Premiership.

Warnock never really spent any money though did he?

Remember he was here 8 years give or take.

Most he spent was probably on Claude 'Knifeman' Davies and we got that back from Derby the following summer.

Lost a million on Hulse due to his injury, Shelton, Akikbiyi and Horsfield, though the latter was all at Terry Robinson's door.

He did however nurture Jags who went for 4m after relegation and Tonge who brought in 2.5m.

So if you look at either his own transfer dealings or what happened to those he signed, then he'd not be far off evens i don't think. Plus we were Championship bottom 2 when he arrived. When he left we'd finished 3rd bottom of the PL and went down by a single goal. With the best wishes to Luton Shelton today, it's a stark reminder that a penalty at Old Trafford to making the scoreline 2-1 would have been one goal enough. Though now I've checked we would have gone down on goals scored!
