That the only way we are going to get promotion from this league is to spend our way out, Leeds and Wendy eventually realised it and bought players to get them up, Bristol City have realised it and are already Champions elect.

I am furious that we have fucked up this season when the league is the weakest it has been since we came down, already looking at the bottom of the Championship there looks like next season once again there will be at least one team with Premier League Parachute payments in League one which as we have seen is almost a free pass out of the division.

If the Prince isn't going to put serious sums in then there seems to be little point in him being here for him or us, oh and Nigel Clough looks like a mid table manager whichever league he is in so I can't see him getting promotion with out buying it.

The point about Leeds and the Pigs is well made, like us they were "the name" in this league and for teams like us and them we are never going to be a side that sneaks up almost unnoticed to promotion like Bournmouth and Rotherham

Every team we play at this level is going to treat it as their cup final so the only way to win is to assemble a squad worthy of that reputation and over whelm these sides,

The paper prince doesn't look like he is going to fund this sort of thing though so how we are ever going to get promoted I don't know, we could be years away at this rate.

Really frustrated tonight, and to cap it all since we've gone gas I cant even chuck me tea on fire back without an argument !!!!!!

The thought of "this" division next season or after is too frightening to think about.

We HAVE to be better than ANY opposition who try harder against the so called big teams in any division - we did when last in the Prem - it's just what happens.

We need to invest in a good striker or maybe 2 or we will not be up there come the end of this season!

Harry's got a point, this is a poor division this season. An ideal opportunity to escape.

Next year could see the likes of Fulham, Bolton, Birmingham, Wigan etc finding there way down in the third tier of English football. Doesn't make it any easier.

Stick your "hysteria" up your arse - we are seriously shit and the fact that we'll still probably make the playoffs goes to show the absolute mincemeat we should be making of this shit league.

Cheers McCabe et all.

Fuming Mendonca.

It's ok being told the money will be there when we get into the Championship but we've got to fucking get there first.

Let's be reet we should have gone up at the first time of asking, the obvious apart (Evans), in the PO final Huddersfield missed their first 3 pens, not to win the shoot out from there was criminal. The season after was a f***ing gimme for promotion, the division was very poor and what did McCabe do sell Blackman for £1.5m and tried to replace him on the cheap with loans and freebies, that was criminal.

This season is far from dead, it's quite easy to put big winning runs together with the right team in this division but they need to get quality in soon. For me it's central defence that needs improving. Evans coming back will help up top.

No it wont, the penny will never drop at this club. This is it, as good as it gets.
The only way out of this division for this clueless club is to hoofball it's way out.
Good ol' Hoofball, the only style that Sheffield United have any chance whatsoever of getting even a miniscule amount of success with.

Lets have a look at the facts: From the mid seventies to the late eighties we had a very very long period of misery......and then:
Dave Bassett = Hoofball = Miniscule amount of success, but it was miserable most of the time.
Long period of real misery then followed

Neil Warnock = Hoofball = Miniscule amount of success, still miserable most of the time
Period of real misery then followed

Kevin Blackwell = Hoofball = Even more miniscule amount of success (play offs) still miserable most of the time
Long period of real misery ever since.

Bit of a pattern emerging here isn't there.

So, my take on it is that we can have a miniscule amount of success playing totally shit hoofball that makes everybody miserable but might get a miniscule amount of success or we can try to play a bit of football which isn't possible for this club and get no success and have real misery.
Great choice we have isn't it.

If you think it was miserable most of the time under basset and warnock and real misery under blackwell then I think you are watching either the wrong team or the wrong sport

must be like watching isis beheading your family then this season

I don't agree that this is a rubbish League. There are some really good teams in it, but we aren't one of them.

Chesterfield were the better side in every area of the pitch yesterday and I suspect that their players are no better paid than United's so it is a fact that Paul Cook has done a much better job there with his resources than the last three Blades managers have done.

Murphy, Baxter, Campbell-Ryce and possibly Scougall. That's the sum of United's current squad who are good enough to play in a top six side. Chesterfield had a playmaker and number 8 in Jimmy Ryan who is streets ahead of our own version. 3-2 doesn't tell the true story of the game and I simply don't understand why, when Higdon went off, United spent the rest of the first half and the first ten minutes of the second playing a 4-5-0 formation. Why didn't McNulty come on straight away? Why did the bench have none of Porter, De Girolamo or Dimaio on it? Or even McGahey? At least he is a big lad who could have caused some trouble. Why did we fail so dismally, for so long, to put pressure on a young goalkeeper who could be expected to be a nervous wreck? Why wait till it's too late to bring on Jamal and make use of his ability to get dangerous crosses in?

The Spireites supporters were taking the piss out of us. That's shameful. And it's an unacceptable state of affairs, surely. We seem to have a big enough squad to send two Third Division teams out on the field but it's full of third rate players.

The other teams don't need to treat matches against United as special games in order to outplay us. It's not because we are Sheffield United and get them over-excited that sides give us the run around; it's because we simply are not good enough to stop it from happening.

yeah that's a classic. they're probably shitting themselves that we get promoted. it reminds me of the 'if you win a gold medal we'll give you lottery funding guff.. I was prepared to give them the benefit but it hit me yesterday that these people are seriously full of shit.. i'll give them two quid for their one quid share.. 100 percent return on investment..

I largely agree, but waiting for Evans is likely to be another cheap decision that will lead to another 3rd division season. It will be Christmas before there's a chance he's anyrhing like, and there will be too big a gap by then.

For all the focus on more investment, it's up to the manager to demonstrate that he wants to go out and win matches with the squad he's got. Right now he's failing to do that.

Evans will not come back. he is being kept in play 'simply' because then they don't have to go out and get a striker ..this whole thing is a con trick

That might have been true the first year in L1, but don't think so now. Not for every team. Our "cup final" was mk dons, weekend before last. If we manage to stay at the top for a few more weeks, we will have another "cup final" at Swindon. If we drop out of contention, there won't be any "cup finals" at Ashton Gate, not even when Sheff Utd visit. Sorry to tell you this! And if your players are labouring under this "cup final" impression, you want to give them a proper big kick up the arse....

I don't think the cup final comment should have been aimed at you as a club, more your smaller clubs and the local derbies we have this season, for whom Sheffield United is a big scalp and Bramall Lane some arena to play in.

Oh and you can tell you aren't bothered about us, what with you reading our entire message board and commenting on a thread solely about how crap we are, comes across loud and clear that we mean nothing...

Yep, when I watched Chesterfield stick the third in, in Saturday's third division clash, I couldn't help reminding myself about the dark, dark days under Warnock.

Onwards and upwards. A mid table clash with Orient, and the joy in knowing if they go in front we'll then make a game of it. Thank god we've progressed.

Agree, I mean that triple assault season, beating the pigs 3 - 1 with the Brown volley, Jags and Nuddy versus Leeds and all that, the Forest play off - some of the worst, most boring football I have ever seen at the lane....

...but what if I am on one or two other L1 club forums as well? I don't know about "bothered," but I'm certainly interested in how other fans see things and talking about football.

I agree that Bramall Lane is the best ground to play in in L1, and the big crowds you get are part of that. And that you lot are a "scalp" for many clubs, but not all clubs. That was my only point. I got ticked off by Judge for coming on here and "patronising" you all the other day, so I thought I would go the other way. Can't get it right!

I think you probably need to get out more.

No offence intended - just don't see how you can speak for the entire league saying you aren't bothered about us - while trawling through entire posts on our message board.

I don't like the billy big bollocks attitude and like I said, I actually agree with you that for Bristol City we wont be seen as a cup final. However it is quite obvious that we have the biggest ground currently in the league and are probably the biggest 'name' - although we don't have the team to match! It is likely that some teams may give an extra bit when playing us - especially the local sides where we will invariably be their biggest crowd of the season.

Nowhere have I spoken for the entire league - it was zablade, who I originally quoted, that stated "every team in this league will treat it as their cup final," meaning when they play Sheff Utd. All I said was that this wasn't the case for every team, and explained why in our case. You seem to have taken this as a bit of an insult and decided I am "billy big bollocks." It wasn't intended to be insulting, only informative, as I like to think I can speak for BCFC more than zablade can.

You're not wrong though, I could do with getting out more but that's another story...

The billy big bollocks quote wasn't aimed at you bristolboy - if you re read I was refrencing me thinking weare the biggest team in the league.

ie I don't like rubbing in the fact with other teams that we are 'bigger' at this level as that is poor form and the stuff of wednesdayites. However it is true of the league this season and in some games will be a disadvantage. That's all.

Okay, got you now! It's all too easy to get wires crossed on this forum thing, and misunderstand each other.

I should've just said that the way we played against Blades in both games last season, it didn't look like we were treating it like a cup final! Two very limp and pathetic performances. There are people down here that have a similar bbb attitude, even though we are never the biggest club, or rarely even second biggest; I was guilty of thinking like that myself when I was younger. It can be counter-productive. Sometimes, size and the expectations that come with it can be like a millstone round the collective neck.

However, I see you won last night. So, if we were to meet in the jpt at Wembley, I would expect us to treat that game like a cup final.....

Enough of this nonsense, I will leave you to it

But what about the ethos?
