We need somebody who can hit the target with power from 25 yards, if the keeper catches it well done, if it flies in the back of the net great but the most likely outcome is the keeper stops it and it comes back out into the danger area just as if the ball had been crossed and it needs exploiting.

When someone actually looked at how infrequently it works? What's better, five shots that go in 5% of the time, or turning four of those shots into nothing and one into a chance that goes in 30% of the time? I'm sure I read somewhere that we have the highest percentage of shots taken from inside the box in the whole PL, which I think is everything to do with CWAK actually doing the analysis into what works rather than our players not being able to shoot from distance

We didn't get a chance on target in 2 games, if other clubs play that way we are in for a long season.
Now point me to the research that says that so few goals come as the result of longer range shots, I'm talking about anything from outside the area not just those from the half way line.

It's not just as simple as 'this shot is x% likely to go in, this other shot is y% likely to go in' though. For example, having a known effective long-range shooter in the team means the opposition know they need to defend against it, which might open up opportunities elsewhere.

As it is, everyone knows how we work chances, and that they can all but ignore the possibility of a shot from distance, and can therefore defend accordingly.

Every time we change leagues the philosophy of what works will change. In theory we've been through 2 leagues with a superior tactician in charge, now he's competing against his peers.

I'd be surprised if there's a single team in the entire league that doesn't have some sort of analytics team. You can trivially find the probability of any given shot taken in the Premier League resulting in a goal based off previous data. I'm not going to do research for you.

I saw an analysis of all the shots during the Euros eight years ago. Shots from inside 6yd area - 1 in 4 success. Shots from outside the box, 1 in 50 success.

What, so shots from much closer to goal had a higher percentage success rate than those from further out? Well blow me down. This discussion started with the statement that shooting from distance was stupid. I disagreed. It was then claimed that it came from within the club but we think it was Wilder but he might not have said it. I was never advocating shooting from distance on every occasion but to call shooting from distance stupid is frankly ridiculous. If you dont shoot you dont score as the old adage goes. Watch highlights every week, many goals are scored from outside the box. IMO it's an area in which we need to improve.

United cant afford to squander possession for the sake of hopeful long range pings, hence why we have developed a style of play where we dont shoot from distance. I'm sure the analytics fella on the blades pod went into this a few times during our promotion season.
