Oli Norwood

His deliver from free kicks and corners is sublime. It feels similar to watching England in this years World Cup where we were so strong from set pieces I expected us to score every time. Same here with Norwood

It just shows the difference when you have a midfielder who's first thought is "How can I get us on the front foot"
Against a midfielder who's first thought is "I'll pass it nice and tidily backwards or sideways to give somebody else the responsibility"

"We've brought in players that will create the usual silence, the flat atmosphere, the pensive, awkward, let's wait and see what happens type of signings."

Norwood was strange during his time with us. Some weeks he looked unplayable and one of the divisions top midfielders. Others drifted about and was a passenger.

No doubting his technical ability. And it was a while since he played for Town, may well have upped the ‘ugly’ side of his game since then.

Glad to see him do well for you.

I noticed on his free kicks he has that Beckamesque shape to his body.

Greetings Sean
I like Norwood, liked him last season as well and I'm glad he's come here, just not at the expense of Brooks who I'd have preferred for one more season.
Brooks, Duffy, Norwood, Fleck and Coutts rotating would have been frightening

Doesn't really explain the post though JJ.

Had you been out until 5am again?

Olly Olly Norwood, to the tune of Tony Tony Currie,

how similar are they in movement and the spraying of the ball out wide, seriously there are some very similar movements and similarities in a 40 years different sort of way !
That's weird, I watched him yesterday and he did something, I cant reember exactly what it was, and I though that reminds me of Tony Curry. It wasn't anything he did with the ball just a mannerism. I saw Tony many times, and he's not in the same class YET. But you never know, this guy is a revelation.

Do you want to know the best bit?

His best years are still ahead of him.

He's 27. Not 28 until April. His type of player will generally peak between 29-31. His role is one that requires intelligence and experience more than fitness and athleticism.

Also, he's been on an upward curve since leaving Huddersfield and went on to feature prominently for two promoted clubs in the last two seasons. He's still on that upward curve, and I think this season will see him play the best football of his career. He fits like a glove in our team and will get more of the ball.

He's a great player and a massive good luck charm, he gets teams promoted.

It all depends how a player is used.
At Sheff Utd Norwood plays quite deep, mainly defensive midfield taking the ball off the defenders to set the tempo and build attacks.
He plays almost a quarter back role so is gaurenteed to be heavily involved, his role in the team makes it almost impossible for him to drift out of games because the defense have been told to pass it to him, he finds space and has good instant control.
Fortunately he also has other midfilders around him who are also comfortable receiving the ball even when semi marked up.
The thing that I find impressive with Norwood is his decision making, he knows when to keep it simple and make short passes and when to be more direct with long passes.

We are all excited by Olie Norwood, but did anybody suggest him as a player to go for in the Rumour Mill? I don't suggest players but some like Ricky, Bladezz and Cartman and others are clued up anyone ?

Bladezz nailed it.

Ideally I’d like to see us sell Evans and bring in Norwood. Evans would interest Wigan surly! Add an extra 750k and we could get Norwood.

Saying that don’t think Brighton want to deal with us after we keep rejecting the JoC bids.

It’s always tricky to gaurantee the effectiveness of a player because often players are given different roles and responsibilities in a team. Just because a player is great in one team doesn’t automatically he’ll be as good in another team.

For example at Fulham, they may have several free kick and corner specialists, so Norwood would share that role.
Here he takes them all, the regular involvement means he has a better chance at being consistent within a game.

Also at Fulham I believe McDonald was their main “quarterback” midfielder dictating tempo with Norwood helping out.
Here Norwood has been given more responsibility playing the “Coutts role” and at the moment he’s thriving on it.

Is it sad that I'm looking forward to watching the Northern Ireland game over the England game just because of this man...

And I'm no England hater.

Starting for Northern Ireland Washington is in the bench
