One of the things that really strikes me when you look at the line-ups for Academy games is that relatively few make it through and end up playing professionally.

Compare and contrast - as my old exam papers used to say - the Northern Intermediate League Cup Final from April, 1964. Leeds: Harvey, Smith, Wright, Greenhoff, Madeley, Gray, Bates, Johnson, Belfitt, Lorimer, Lowery. The Blades: Walton, Badger, Shaw B, Munks, Bell, Clarke, Woodward, Wagstaff, Birchenall, Barlow, Disney.

The vast majority broke through to play first team football, some at a very high level indeed.
I have a photo of the team in the dressing room with the cup. It was given to me by George Robinson. I will post it in here this weekend

Woody's Teddy Boy hairstyle in the Joe Shaw Souvenir Special!, Captain Eddie having a fag in the 1971 promotion celebrations in the Directors box. Eccentric ref Roger Kirkpatrick's strange pose in the photo of Woody's penalty against Watford

Ah yes, Eddie having a fag and with a bottle of champers. When football was played by real men.
