International break time and that means loads of hypothetical threads.

My contribution is this; which players from the past would have fit perfectly into the CWAK system?

A couple of obvious ones come to mind simply by virtue of being cracking wing backs - Vas Borbokis and Wayne Quinn. Given the extra license our wing backs have, I think they'd have flourished as they did in the Spackman side.

One other, Matt Kilgallon. I think he'd have done excellently in the J O'C role. Harry is another clear shout for the other side of the central three.

I mean, I can't be arsed, but extra points to anyone who wants to put a full 11 together...

Been saying for quite a while that Matty Lowton would be a perfect fit (as would kyle Walker - probably out of our range at present) for the over-lapping CB role.

From while i have been going to matches:
Kelly
Maguire - Cahill - Coady
Walker-----------------------Naughton
Murphy - K Mac - Brown

Brooks - Beattie
Defence - Maguire has had success playing in a back 3 at the WC, driving forward and making runs upfield, also Coady is mobile and I reckon could do damage in the JOC role.

Midfield - Kevin Macdonald was as close to Norwood as we have had pre-Wilder, I reckon he could have still have been a regular for us in the PL under CWAK if we kept him . Murphy could have done the Fleck role, and Brown in Lundstram's... he fought as hard as any player on the pitch that i have seen.

Forwards - Brooks as i would imagine he could link the play like Didzy given time and learning the role. Beattie cus we need an out and out goalscorer!

Vas Borbokis and Dane Whitehouse were tailor made for the wide roles in the current set up.

Great shout on Dane. Always liked Ward and Bradders at RB too, but I was relatively young so time may have softened their bad performances.

John Flynn would have played the Jake Wright role. Central defender nobody had heard of, solid pro without obvious outstanding talent, barely put a foot wrong, happy not to cross the half-way line except for the occasional corner.

John Gannon was pretty good in the scapegoat role.

Powell was much better than Flynn

Is that Jamie Murphy in central midfield? If so: why?

True. But he had more obvious talents. Flynn and Jake Wright had limited talent, as far as I could tell, but really good footballing brains. And there is something very satisfying in seeing that sort of player succeed.
Flynn used to frustrate me by playing back passes to keeper's hands rather than play a pass

Leon Britton in the Norwood role.

There was a thread on this earlier this year, here.

My thoughts were:

Goalkeepers. Hodgkinson, Tracey or Kelly? Great though they were, I suspect that there are other outfield positions where more benefits could be gained.
Centre backs. It's hard to think of any ex players who'd have the energy and attacking skills to fill either the LCB or RCB roles in the current system. Possibly Jagielka in his prime? We have had some wonderful centre backs, and I could imagine Joe Shaw, Paul Stancliffe, Brian Gayle, Paul McGrath fitting neatly into the Egan role if needed.
Left wing back. Dane Whitehouse, Wayne Quinn (his good spell), Curtis Woodhouse would all fit the system, I think. But would they be better than Enda? I don't know enough of the older (pre 1980s) players to know whether they'd adapt to the attacking wing back approach. Tony Kenworthy? Gil Reece??
Right wing back. Obvious recent choices could be Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton, Matt Lowton or Vas Borbokis. Going back a bit further, I can imagine John Pemberton fitting the system nicely, or possibly Carl Bradshaw. Even further, I don't know enough about Len Badger's style know whether he'd fit RWB.
Centre midfield. They would need to have a decent defensive mind, but be able to use the ball well too. Options since 2000 could include Michael Brown, Stuart McCall or Michael Tonge. People will slaughter me for this, but I actually think that John Gannon would fit our system very very well - he won the ball a lot and could feed the wide players effectively. Good on set pieces too. Gordan Cowans' brief spell showed how well he used the ball. I'm struggling with 1980s players - possibly Glenn Cockerill? Would Tony Currie fit that deeper role? I'm sure there are plenty from the 1960s and 1970s that would do well.
Attacking midfield. Some very good options here. I don't know whether Tony Currie would be best suited to this role, or the deeper midfield role (older fans will tell me). Alan Woodward could fit here, and drift to either wing to support the overloading full backs. Glyn Hodges would add creativity. Alex Sabella?
Centre forwards. Again, there are some decent options up top. I'm not old enough to know whether Jimmy Hagan would fit this role or the attacking midfield position. The system we play (creating a lot of chances) rewards poachers, so Keith Edwards would be worth a look. Obviously going way back, there would be Harry Johnson, Jimmy Dunne and Derek Pace, who could seemingly find the net if given half a sniff. Brian Deane would definitely add something different too, and could be a great partner for Sharp (assuming he stayed in).

MacDonald , Evans ( pre his HMP stint ) and Coady from that era
Brown , McCall , Walker , Naughton from 2000s
Borkokis , Whitehouse , Quinn , McGrath , Cowans , Deane , Fjortoft from that era very similar formation under Spackman
Kelly ,Tracey Agana from Bassett time
Cockerill , Morris , Edwards , Arnott from 80,s
Woodward , Colquhoun maybe even Sabella would have flourished in a past a team ?

You were obviously young and impetuous then. With the change in the back-pass rule and some of our goalies and defenders in the recent past, there have been moments where I would have loved to be able to see a back-pass to the keeper’s hands. Though in old age, my goalkeeping ‘career’ ended when I bent down to pick up a back-pass, and couldn’t straighten my back up again...

Gordon Cowans would be ahead of KMac in my opinion. Murphy could be in the Didzy role

The back 5 ?

Bradshaw, Walker, Maguire,Killa,Whitehouse

Midfield

Brown,Cowans,Cockerill

Didzy role

Murphy

No 9

Deane

Tri Dellas at centre half would have bestrode the pitch like the Colossus of Rhodes.

I remember going to see The Blades at Bradford, evening kick off, & the only tickets I could get were in the home stand, same side as the dugouts. Dellas was a sub, & when he got up & ran up & down the line a couple of times I swear the whole bloody stand shook! Such a shame he had his back troubles when he was with us, he could have been a great, what a physique he had.

Great headed goal by Flynn from a Woody corner when we smashed Leeds 3-0. Eddie Colquhoun scored a nearly identical goal in the same match.

Surprised no one has mentioned Alan Quinn in the Fleck/Norwood role.
On his day a supremely gifted midfielder.
