Two thoughts: tell me the middle one is a very old photo and you're not still rocking Windows 95, and second, where was Brocklehursts? No memory of it whatsoever, and it's pretty distinct. Only place I can think it might be is where the filling station at Meadowhead roundabout is. What used to be Alan Pond's I think?
That’s right. Brocklehurst’s was a well known car dealer at the time. Not sure of the exact location as a lot of things moved when the roundabout was built. I’m sure they had a place on the way into Chesterfield as well. Two thoughts: tell me the middle one is a very old photo and you're not still rocking Windows 95, and second, where was Brocklehursts? Yes, Meadowhead when it was 4 Lanes EndTwo thoughts: tell me the middle one is a very old photo and you're not still rocking Windows 95, and second, where was Brocklehursts? Had a few wet afternoons in there whilst working in Chap.
Dronfield bypass was opened on 16th October 1975, Meadowhead roundabout was early 1970s. Gosforth estate housing grew in late 1960s/ early 1970sErnest Brocklehurst had that garage at '4 lane ends' at Norton plus one in Chesterfield. I think it was opposite where Chesterfield FC ground is now. May well be Asda there now.
The hedge to the left in the top picture would have been the boundary of the Sheffield Transport Club which of course is now earmarked for the new Sheffield FC & Sheffield Eagles development.
It's amazing to think that road was just a normal 2 lane road when one sees the volume of traffic and the large roundabout that's been built today.
There are traffic lights there but I'm sure I can recall a police officer in a white coat directing traffic. Lowedges was almost complete in 1960, there was no Batemoor, Jordanthorpe and I don't think many of the new houses in Dronfield had been completed. Certainly no St James Retail Park. The Norton pub would have been there opposite Brocklehursts, may well have been before it was a Berni Inn.
There was no Dronfield by-pass. A bus journey to Chesterfield seem to take an age.
Brocklehurst used to advertise on TV. I am sure part of the advert was filmed in Graves Park.
'Every day and any day buy your car the Brocklehurst way. You can always trust the car you buy from...Brocklehurst of Sheffield'
Catchy tune that I can remember 64 years later. (Don't ask me what I did yesterday)
Ken Mulhearn in goal for Everton. never played a league game for them but was Man City keeper when they won the league in 1968, and played against us for Crewe in the Fourth Division Championship season just before he retired.
Was at Selhurst Park but against Wimbledon , I was there .. he was glued to the goal line all day & was shite .. but saved a penView attachment 196690

Might be wrong but I think the top one is the 'now' version...that Austin with the big pole stuck on the roof is one of those Google Street view cars.Hard to tell which is before and now versions
I'm fairly certain Brocklehursts were on Whittington Moor further up on the left hand side. It was virtually opposite where Gordon Lamb were on Whit Moor. Gordon Lamb also had a site on Pottery Lane, eventually Sheepbridge and they took over the Europa Cars site on Eccleshall Road South.

It was "Old Cyclops" (Gordon Lamb, John's Dad) when it first opened and when I worked there between '81 and '83. What a truly horrible and oppressive environment to work in. Gordon started off with a butchers shop and moved onto to 2nd hand cars and eventually new VW's.Sheepbridge was John Lamb.

Jack Charlton in the Household Cavalry team in the mid fifties during his National Service - the player sat in front of him is tagged as Eric Brocklehurst who briefly played for Sheffield United. Can anyone verify the last sentence?
Left front row looks like Jim Iley?
It's not UnitedAs per my previous post, I am researching my family history with the help of my second cousin. And this picture has come from her grandfathers plumbing shop which was based on old London Road. He was a big Blades fan, so we presume it is Sheffield United however despite all of my research, I cannot confirm this. Therefore if anyone can help us solve this conundrum it would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
