Is that Eckhart in the top pic ? Was trying to work out who the opposition was in that kit .. advertising hoardings around the pitch says Scarborough ? but I don’t think we’ve played em other than friendlies?
Brian Smith. Yorkshire & Humberside Cup final in 1988/89 season.

I wasn’t born in Jessop’s, but I was Christened in St George’s church on the left of the picture.

Seeing that photo has brought back memories that , for whatever reason , when the ground was also used for cricket many of our left sided players / wingers seemed to prefer and performed much better on the pavilion side of the pitch.

Geoff Salmons was a prime example of this in that almost all of his best moments in my memory came from when he attacking on that side rather than in front of John Street .

He was not alone in this since the same applied to a number of his predecessors including Collindridge and Hawksworth.
Hard to explain but certainly the case from my recollections.

Just saw this cracking photo on Twitter, says taken from the top of the Arts Tower. Fair few on here will have been born in old Jessops there in the pic.

Yes, that is a cracking photo.👍

Around the centre of the shot it shows the office block, with white outer facings on the various levels, at the top of Gell Street where I started work on the top floor in 1975. At the time the bottom two floors were occupied by the School of Physiotherapy, the trainee physios all seemed to be young females in gym outfits. Sadly, it subsequently relocated.

By the time I was working there some of the buildings between it and the University roundabout had been demolished, as I remember the area being a car park for the hospital staff. If you parked there without authorisation you could return to find your front windscreen obscured with horribly adhesive stickers. That happened to a woman I knew in the Payroll Section. Bad choice. Not a lady to annoy. Able to fully express her displeasure. 😮

We had office procedures for all sorts of possible events including, as the Troubles had started, what to do if we received an explosive device in the post from the Provos. Also, in the event of an attempted raid on the cashiers office down the corridor, one of us was delegated to ring the police whilst the rest were supposed to rush and tackle the raiders. I think these days Health & Safety might have some objections to that idea.

The block was linked by a walkway to the Jessop. We used the canteen and coffee lounges there. One lunchtime we realised that another diner was Alex Sabella whose wife had just given birth to Sabella junior at the hospital. A colleague rushed from our table to get his autograph, the only paper he had available was the label he tore out of his jacket. 🤦‍♂️

Whilst I worked there our son was born at Jessop in 1982.

yes your right and also noticeable that woody was far more lethal down the right attacking the kop than down john st towards the lane end

It’s certainly strange, I can also clearly recollect Geoff Salmon’s pacy touchline runs and all seem to be from that side!
