prime example boxing day 79
I understand, from what I've read on here, that all started in the tunnel pre game.
I wouldn't know, daughter and I were imitating tinned sardines in that fucking central tunnel to terracing, with a little WPC kicking my achilles tendons and yelling "move forward". If any one had gone down it would have been what it eventually became.
Good start to't day though, me in mi bobble hat and her with her scarf, no public transport till Noon, gorra lift from East bank Rd to Fowlsborough by Blades with flowing scarves from car windows. Top o' league if memory serves as well. Car crash season in 't end.
Retribution came, eventually with the 'Bounce Killer'2017-18 Anti bounce.jpg.
All part of being a Blade, downs and ups.
Went over t'top a bit answering AB but trying to put off cutting the grass before it rains.:)

Excellent bit of club history, but what fascinated me was the brick structure to the left of the "real" AW.
Not that the young'un wasn't/isn't real but you know what I mean. Don't you?. Commentators nightmare.
I never realised it existed, obviously toilets, and it did before 1966.

Mind it was a rarity for me to go on the Bramall Lane end anyway. Another school day.
I remember having a discussion in here about this photo. The old floodlights were removed in December 1961 so the photo will be just before then

Yes, SB I am sure that is right.
Unfortunately, I had moved out of Sheffield about four months previously so have no physical recollection of the change over, or even construction of the new lights. I was home for Christmas and must have gone to the Boxing Day game V Blackpool but again no recollection.
Though I do remember when I saw the new lights and it must have been the Blackpool game, what a great idea it was to have the 5th pylon, and probably making SUFC some what unique and that appealed to me.
Of course 5 pylons came about because of the topography of Bramall Lane. I still shed the odd tear for the loss of the cricket but as it turned out it would have happened with YCCC consolidating at Headingly, to the detriment of Sheffield, where it all started.

yes tony kenworthy mentions it in his autobiography but charlton did a number on us that day similar to what dave basset used to do to them still think to this day if that chance had gone in first half we would have won that day

Thanks to you both, HBT & SB. Ta :D

Missed all the bad weather of early '62, but remember leaving home, late Dec, with 5 foot heaps of snow piled on the pavements only able to walk on the road and below freezing, buses were running though.
Reason for piled up snow was, we were in Derbyshire and road clearance was contracted to a local farmer who used his tractor with a snowplough slung under and between the front and back wheels of the tractor.
Even the household water was supplied from Derbyshire and as hard as nails, unlike Sheffield water soft and good to drink, which we had had until '59 when we moved no more than a mile from Hollinsend to the top of Base Green.
Your photo is very evocative to me.
Terrace, where we stood, myself from around 1950-90's, though nearer centre line, Bramall Lane side.
White railings, etched in mi memory for ever.
The section of the JSS where I first attended reserve games,1947-48 season aged five, paying little attention to the football but being fascinated by all around me, what was and is BDTBL.

There are more details on the Norwich game, the floodlight damage and the Sheffield gale in post 852 of the 60 Years Ago thread.

When Saturday Comes. In shops now.
Interesting articles, for one of my age and who saw Jack Cross play.
Regarding the programmes show as representative of Jack playing for United they are bad representations.
The top one shows John Spencer shooting V Notts Forest in the FAC. Jack didn't play this game.
Bottom prog., shows Derek Hawksworth shooting V Liverpool in the Burnley prog. of 27 March 1954. On magnifying this I am more than certain it's DH.

Programmes with Jack Cross shown playing for United at the Lane are.
1953-54 Liverpool prog., photo V Middlesbrough. On far L.
1954-55 Everton Aug 21 prog., photo Squad FR 4thR.
" Chelsea Sept 20 " " V Cardiff heading.
" Blackpool Oct 16 " " V PNE central.
" Man Utd Nov 13 " " V Spurs far L.
" Newcastle Jan 1 " " V Bolton far L.
" Charlton April 9 " " V Huddersfield Far L foreground.
Hope this is decipherable, and no angst, UAB, all done in the best possible taste.:)

can see the barrier i used to lean against on the bramall lane end in the early 60s in the corner was a great view one game that stands out for me standing there was united 5 west ham 3 think it was round about 1965
You weren’t worried on windy days about the floodlight pylon behind you…?🤣

Fairly sure I started watching United from the same area!
If I remember rightly, the other side of that low wall was a section of the white railing (about 10 foot long) that was hinged and had a wheel at the base at one end so the whole section could be opened to allow access to the pitch for wheelchairs. The whole area was at ground level, so view for kids was good.
One particular big guy in a wheelchair was there every game, rain or shine, and every time opposition got a throw-in by that corner, he'd shout out "Goalie, Mick, Goalie Mick" so Mick Jones could cut out a throw to the keeper.
The useless things you remember!

to hear the shoreham chanting from the lane end was fantastic but getting on there was something else in the mid 60s

Any idea on a date for this team group? A few decent players here!
1955-56? Cliff Mason first played at the beginning of that season, and Peter Wragg (I think that is him in the middle of the front row) last played at home in March 1956. Hagan and Joe Shaw stand out as great talents who played for many years at the Lane. 2 other stars (Colin Grainger and Jim Iley) were about to be sold.

The pitch looking good would probably mean a home match early in the 1955-56 season so I think it was the 2-1 defeat against Burnley on 1st October 1955
Back row Hoyland, Coldwell, Burgin, Mason, J Shaw, Iley
Front row: Ringstead, Hagan, Wragg, Howitt, Grainger
