So Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Essex were the 4 teams.
Nope, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Kent. Pay attention at the back, you two!

I suspect the Graham Gooch thing came from him playing in the 1981 tournament when all 17 counties took part (but not at Bramall Lane).

Ok, I remember thinking "Yorkshire failed to win again"

Yep, that bit was right. The only reason I can remember that Derbyshire won was because as my dad and I left the Lane, the thickest kid in our year at High Storrs (I won't name him in case by some miracle he may still be alive, meaning nobody has taken an axe to him by now) was walking down Bramall Lane chanting, "Woah Derby, woah Derby!" until we could get far enough away from the thick cunt to not hear him.

As an aside, he really was utterly dense; I quote one of my friends word-for-word who told me this: "He thinks when you get a hard-on a bone comes into your nob."

On cricket. Anyone remember that fantastic drama: Bodyline?. Think it was a 6 parter on a 30s Ashes tour of Australia. Was on in the days before binge watching and you had to wait a week for the next episode.
They don't make them like this anymore, not enough swearing or sex in it or voting to keep the public interested. Mind they could always have Ant& Des as umpires.

26/9/1964. Lost 3-1 (Docherty scored for us). The only time Matthewson and Richardson in same team at Upton Park. Line up was Hodgkinson, Badger, G Shaw, Richardson, J Shaw, Matthewson, Docherty, Kettleborough, Jones, Birchenall, Hartle. Byrne (2) and Sissons scored for Hammers

I think that section on the roof of the stand is the old press box, and a temporary extension to it not under cover.

Although that old John St stand wasn’t that tall, I reckon sitting on the front row would have been a bit scary, it’s a sheer drop to the terrace below. Plus as you say, no protection from the elements.

Yes, I was on the Kop for the 1959 cup game which was against Norwich who were in the old 3rd division at the time. The score was 1-1, don't think there was extra time in those days. I think we lost the replay but it was no surprise as Norwich had already beaten Spurs and Man U along the way.
The Press building ,on the roof, must have had a temporary addition (as SSM says above) as I don't remember ever seeing the front bit, as seen in the photo.
The second World War bomb smashed the roof very close to that point if not , actually, the Press box itself.

Looking at this photo the drop onto the Terrace would be around 8-9 feet(2.4- 2.7 Mts.).
What I find interesting about the photo is that it is at the time when SUFC were updating their floodlights, a fact not so evident in the first photo posted on this thread.
