I saw Marti Caine support Russ Abbot at Torquay pavilion in 1981 ,first holiday with my mates. She was fucking terrible and was booed off ,abbot was really good. First on was Roger de Courcey and Nookie bear ,very daring for the day and hilarious. Marti Caine when she was struggling said 'anyone from Sheffield ?' we clapped ,and she responded throw them a fish ,complete silence, and embarrassing.
Sherbert used to attract some proper flange but out of my teenage bracket , had to put them in the 'bank' for later. I always thought it belonged to Bobby knutts Mrs, Donna hartley ,I know she had the Fringe above the Surrey (now the Graduate)
Was that when it was supposed to be Freddie Starr but he cancelled at short notice? I saw her somewhere in Torbay in the early eighties, I was only young and saw quite a few shows down there over a few years. Definitely saw Roger de Courcey and Nookie Bear and yes, he was funny. She didn’t get booed off when I saw her, she was OK tbf but I was really looking forward to Freddie Starr and very disappointed he didn’t show.

I cant remember we went to the matinee as the weather was a bit iffy ,but it was packed ,next day went to see For your eyes only and I fell asleep after 10 mins despite being 18  Loved Torbay and Babbacombe and yet never been back for a holiday ,only to work and see Utd.
Remember hearing OMDs Souvenir on radio 1 and thinking that will never be bettered ,and Villa playing in the Charity shield on the journey home. Great days.

Just looking at that old pic of the Kop. They should have kept the 'corner' section. It would have fitted into the ground better than the pie corner.
Think the problem was how fast it was falling down.

I had my season ticket in there that year and seem to remember that part of it was closed off by the end of the season because bits were falling off.

Good view though.

Likewise. I’ve been meaning to go back for years. Called in on the way back from Cornwall about 30 years ago to see if it had changed much (it hadn’t) but a few days down there is on my to do list.

Yes indeed. I depended on them to a large extent. I can still even remember the registration plates of several of them! There was a 340 NKT in the fleet - I think it was the same type of bus as the one pictured above. The one below was one of our school buses:

That number plate used to make the girls giggle for some reason? 🤔

The one below was regularly in service on the Killamarsh to Sheffield route (via Coal Aston).

It was the shorter wheelbase version. The longer wheelbase version, HNU 786C, fell in the canal on the bridge at Killamarsh!

I learned to drive with Booth & Fisher. Not in a bus, in a Mk I Ford Escort. Like the one below.

Good car to learn to drive in. Really easy gearbox, good visibility, easy to manoeuvre.
I had one similar to that. Sebring red. Mine was a N reg Escort Sport, very similar, same quarter bumpers but had wider wheel arches. Similar wheels.

Indeed.
Do you have any photos of the residential suburbs of Sheffield in & around the 80’s?
Deaneandagana and Kevreedy.
I mostly took photos which either had a personal connection somehow or were within relatively easy reach of where I was based during the late 70's to early 90's.
I never had a great plan or any definitive purpose for taking them. They were just for my personal satisfaction so they are mainly inner central city/south side-ish based - with a fair few East End and other industrial premises ones which I'd think would be too boring for most on here.
However, I did sometimes venture further so I do have an ad hoc selection of variable quality from several other pockets of the city. I'm afraid my "logging system" is still somewhat haphazard but I'll certainly continue to rummage around some more and see what I come across. :)

Old argument, looked up his height on Wiki, doesn't give it, and for comparison looked at Wright(Billy) and it says 5' 11" but it also says he was born in 1958. Really don't believe Wright was five eleven, would have said he was no more than a couple of inches taller than Joe.
Interesting personal points, my wife has the same birth date as Joe and our eldest son the same as Wright W., that's if info is reliable, never realised the coincidences before.
Cocked that up, wrong Billy Wright, will try again later.
Joe was 5ft 8in.

This was my way to get to the match. On the hour every hour Thurnscoe to Sheffield . Use to pull up outside bottom end of castle market.
Little known fact but Brian Blessed ( GORDONS ALIVE!) use to work there before making it in his acting career.

And he played the part of a Sheffield United fan in Survivors.

Could not remember Survivors. Just looked it up and bugger me, it’s exactly what’s going on in 2020 with a pandemic. Sounds like it screwed The Blades back in 1975 as well 😦😧 . My mate owns Brian Blessed’s mams house in Bolton upon Dearne, just a small foot note.

Was he selling Big Issue?
He might have been. I know he was shouting something, but I couldn't make out what he was saying because he'd got a mask on, I thought he was sneezing actually, so I gave him a wide berth and just looked at him disgustedly - like people do when you sneeze thesedays. It's more embarrassing to sneeze in public than fart in public now! 🤔

I remember seeing the Dearneways buses in Sheffield in the mid 1970's. My mate lived at Wath and it was his main form of transport into the city. I didn't realise they met their demise in 1981 though. The other buses from that area were Yorkshire Traction. I remember they had a big depot at Rawmarsh. My mate from Wath told me they were famous for going fast! (Mind you, that could have been a comparison with a horse and cart - I don't know). I haven't seen one of those on the roads for some years, so I imagine they've gone bust as well. Here's a nice upskirt shot of a Yorkshire Traction bus...

A load more bus companies are going to go bust, especially now with this coroanavirus malarkey. We've got drivers being paid to take these huge vehicles out for a spin and nobody's riding on them except the driver himself! That can't go on for much longer, surely?

Come to think of it, neither does Bert.

Hopefully he hasn't inadvertently posted a photo of our beloved neighbours. Although the caption said Sheffield United v Derby, early 30's

They’re a shifty looking bunch, that can’t be a picture of our heroes. The shirts aren’t consistent either, it looks like three different styles, I can’t believe John Nicholson or Teddy Davison would allow them to turn out looking like a bunch of ageing street urchins.

Quite right there Trigg, could be the snortbeasts, only the socks are consistent.
The only real clue is the badge of which I am no expert on such things.
Just a thought, maybe Newcastle / Nott's County /Sunderland/WBA /Huddersfied?

Yorkshire Traction sold out to Stagecoach in 2005.

Another blast from the past. We used to have the 774 from High Storrs school into town, run by Andrews. All their buses had local names. I always got excited when Sheffield United used to turn up. 🤣 Also in the background, Yorkshire Terrier & Sheafline buses for those who like that kind of thing!

Other High Storrs bus story - there was a driver of the 84 into town who used to shout "airport" when he pulled up to the Cathedral. Good guy but disappeared after hitting trees hard on Greystones Road and cracking a window...

Your a gent, thanks. Still looking for Billy Wright's (the 100 plus capped) height. I've read when he first went to Wolves for a trial, on sight he was told he was too small. They still gave him the trial and it's said, the rest is history.
I think Billy Wright was the same height as Joe Shaw. Again very short for a centre half even in those days. He started off his career at inside right, then half back, before centre half. I guess you know plenty about the rest of his career.

What year were you at HS? I have vague memories of the 774... It was always the 82 after school for us.
