Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

I've been hoping (but don't even know if they've ever bothered to consider it) that the council would do just that to the Town Hall! It would make it look a million times better and more pristine especially as its only one of a few buildings we have that can be seen for miles. It looks like it hasn't ever had it done since it was built 120 odd years ago.

I remember a Cathedral on Look North in either West or North Yorkshire a couple of years ago that had all the stone jet washed and this was on the inside, gave it a new lease of life.

Maybe before lockdown is eventually lifted this would make a good time to have it done... but then again this is SCC we're talking about!

The old old town hall on Waingate could do with a wesh aswell. That had years and years of general soot and then after the clean air act, thousands of diesel buses sat idling outside it. Such a grand building, why the council just let the nice buildings sit in filth I don't know, I suppose we should be thankful they haven't pulled them down though.

Chris Wilder did his best to help by spilling lots of beer on it. But it still needs cleaning properly. I agree. It would give the city a much needed lift.

Town Hall was cleaned around 1959/60ish and if memory serves it was some form of acid then hosed down. Scaffolding was covered in large tarpaulins so as not to splash the public but you needed your galoshes on as the water ran down the walls onto the pavement then down the road gullies. The Old Town hall has been privately owned for years. Nothing to do with the council.

The good news is that (pre-lockdown at least) there is planning permission granted to convert the building into a hotel, cafes and shops. It’ll be interesting to see how the inside is retained (as ordered).

In terms of the new town hall. It would look great cleaned up. Sadly the council has had their budget cut year on year for the last ten years and given the immediate future, I can’t see it happening any time soon.

I’ve always thought it’d be a good idea if the council opened up the town hall for visitors (even if just on a weekend), the clock tower has a balcony and could be an interesting place to go and take in the view. Maybe any proceeds could go towards the restoration of the stone.

Think in the near future both will be renovated for student flats.

You think that of both Town Halls! Well I wouldn't put it past them...

Media: "So where are SCC going to move to once the Town Hall has been sold on for student accommodation just like it's old predecessor?"

SCC: "Well as we're pretty much into the digital age now we don't need as many rooms and storage space for paperwork etc, so the whole Council will be moving into that little Police Box. This move is as a nod to Sheffield's Town Hall by not straying too far from it's premises."

I suppose back then around 1960 we still had enough factories billowing soot out.

I reckon if they ever do get around to sprucing it up again it will stay pristine and probably never need doing ever again. The closest industrial areas now are a bit further away from the city centre and combined with that we're among the greenest cities in Europe now I believe, certainly in the UK if not!

"And don't forget the income and culture from the Asian students. We will still try and find places for some Sheffield and British students but this will take time as the waiting list is full at the moment for the latter"

Any kit experts on here? I had that kit as a young lad and for some reason kept the socks for 40 odd years but not the shirt or shorts. Anyway the point being the socks Kenworthy is wearing are different to the ones I've got. The shirt and shorts however were the same. The socks in the picture clearly have two black bands around the top whereas mine have black lines around the calf and admiral turnovers.
