Bert got in that day. He was one of the few, the gates were shut at 2 o'clock.
I got in that day, went straight in off the coach at about 13.30 (too young to drink, those that went to the pub missed the game), there was plenty of room at the side of the tunnel, me and my mate sat down on the terracing until the game started, blisfully unaware of what was going on outside.

Bert's men went on the train, there was a station very near the ground. There was a massive crowd, Bert pushed passed the United players who were trying to carry the kit skip into the players entrance. It was every man for himself.

April 1989. On the corner of Sorby St/ Hallcar St, (between Carlisle St and Spital Hill).
It looks like it used to be a pub, but I'm not familiar with that neck of the woods.
I only took the pic because I was passing and it looked in a sorry state.

That area really hasn't changed much since your photo was taken, even the cobbles are still there.

Same place today.

Bert and his crew just pushed in to the front. It was the only option.
Me and my dad got in and my Mum went shopping in Manchester ,then we went to Blackpool for the weekend. I was only 9 ,couldnt see a thing ,my abiding memory is someone cycling over the Snake with a scarf tied to the saddle.

I remember vividly being in that, or a similar crush, that day. I had the distinct impression of being entirely amongst Blades outside the stadium. We certainly got there pretty early. My recollection is that, at first, the queue was orderly and good humoured. Then for no apparent reason, we were shepherded and corralled by police on horses, into a shapeless, disorganised and down right dangerous mass of humanity - men women and children. It was genuinely frightening. There was absolutely nothing any of us could do or say except to be edged towards the turnstiles, desperately trying to remain upright. When my mate and I finally got through into the stadium, we were soaked in sweat, top to bottom. My legs were shaking from the strain and effort.
I'm not usually given to melodrama but...How no one was seriously injured or worse, I'll never know. There but for the grace of God ..
As for the match, there seemed to me to be a fair few Blades inside. As it turned out, we had nowt to shout about at the end.

That's an excellent summary of what happened on that day and what it felt like to be in the crush shown on Silent's photo .

Me and my mates were jammed up against one of the police horses and , whilst at first it was a bit of a laugh , it soon turned into a very scary experience in which no one could move and everyone became more and more agitated and over heated almost to the point of suffocation , including the police and their horses and this resulted in a very ugly atmosphere developing .

It was probably the worst situation I've ever been in at a football match and I've been in a few .

Fuck me ! I'd completely forgotten about that but when I read it I instantly remembered us passing him , winding the windows down and giving him a cheer and a thumbs up .

1901 FACF replay ay Burnden Park, L 1-3 to Spurs, only time a non league team won the FAC, after a 2-2 at CP. Foulkes looking a tad upset, apparently he had a short fuse. Behind him Peter Boyle and Harry Thickett, in this photo they make an imposing trio and were, weighing in at fifty odd stone combined. I've got the figures in mi Stanley Mathews Football Annual 1949, second hand from NMH, but not sure where it is.

This feller could have a fight. Interesting story behind him as well, including allegations that he was a coward because he didn't join the army or something like that. It would have taken a brave man to say that to his face though 😉

Oh and, look at his gloves, must be no more than 4oz. Not much point wearing them to be honest.
