Bit off topic but that's also reminded me of when a forward was flagged offside. They'd often run and retrieve the ball and carry it back to the offside position to a polite round of applause from the opposition fans. How times have changed!
First I remember a player doing that was Jackie Sinclair in the 1st half of the Lane derby in October 1970. I turned round asking my dad "why are we clapping?". He replied that Sinclair was being a good sport.

The 97 bus.

Then changed to the number 22 now the number 56 - how to stop people using a public transport system.

They actually pay people to dream these ideas up, bunch of morons.

Back in the day, from town:
81 to Rustlings Road
82 to Ecclesall
88 to Fulwood
60 to Crimicar Lane
74 to Greystones
8/9 Circular

A game against Man City at the Lane, Francis Lee did this. Went to pick up the ball and ran back towards where the offside free kick was to be taken. All the crowd applauded but then he carried on running with the ball before returning it. Cheers turned to jeers. You could tell he was doing it as a wind-up.

Not quite the characters in the game nowadays.

He was a twat though. The original diver.

Seem to remember 97 being Nether Edge Hospital and 22 was Holmesfield.

They were, then they swapped the numbers, - progress WTF.

Nether Edge Hospital was formerly the workhouse, but don't tell those that now inhabit the gated community.
😧

I’m not absolutely certain, but I get the feeling that I’m quite a bit older than you....😁

Yes, I did wonder....... 😬

This was the route late 80s to late 90s. I believe its changed now.

I would do everything in my power to get an 81 or 82. The extra 5 minutes walk from High Storres to Bents Green was torture.

Similar for me, lived at Carterknowle so 82 and 84 good, 81 acceptable but had the extra few yards from the bottom of Ringinglow Road, 83 only if I had to as it took ages to get to the terminus. The good thing is that there was one every few minutes. Nos 4, 50, 59 also acceptable but ran at far less intervals. Don’t even mention the “bottom road” buses, 17,24 and 75, 76 as that would be an uphill walk home!

Also:
28 from Pond Street to Bents Green?
27 to Ringinglow?
50 to Dore
I know it all sounds posh, but we did not have a car, and I was in my teens when we got a phone - anyone else remember the shared line with a neighbour? Lots of potential for embarrassment.

Years ago I remember 59 was the Bradway bus until they introduced the 75 & 76 routes.

There was a time when buses ran from the suburbs into town only. At some stage they made them run into town and then onto suburbs on the opposite side of the city.
