I absolutely love this thread yet at the same time it depresses the fuck out of me. Just when I think that the extent architectural vandalism, that took place in this city post WW2 could not get any worse, I find out about a bit more.

Terry Garbett, Mick Martin, Jim Holton and Colin Franks. Blades 0 Man U 1 (Macari) in March 1974. John Hope's last match for us,
I thought John Hope’s last game was against Ipswich on a Tuesday afternoon when the power cuts were on? Lost 3-0 then we signed Jim Brown who played the following Saturday at Manchester City

This photo really evokes memories for me. Not sure when it was taken but my association started around 1950. My maternal grandmother was the florist on the foreground stall. Look below the clock at the UFO type object. That was the central fountain where the square base had a trough and four large brass taps where I filled buckets with water for the flowers. It was carved out of a particular stone, but forgotten what it was, and quite ornate. Wonder where that finished after demolition? There was no form of heating, with a stone flag floor it was bitter in winter, cool in summer. Most stalls had batons/planks for the workers to stand on, it did held to keep warmer. The two arches either side were entrances, left Exchange St, right Dixon Lane. There was an entrance under the clock with steep stone step that resembled the North Face of the Eiger. In my time at the camera side of the Dixon Lane entrance was a tea stall called Edith's. Knew my gran well and supplied tea etc to her, and again my job to fetch an carry the consumables. Edith also sold Vimto, hot or cold, Horlicks with a whisking or steam device fitted onto the counter, where the milk and Horlicks was turned into frothy topped drink, fascinated me those mixers. Edith moved into the Castle market and became Sally's, a relation, and Sally moved into the Moor Market on the Arundal Gate side by the windows. Thank for posting.

Bert agrees with you.
Yes, that is right, I had forgotten about the midweek Ipswich match which kicked off in the afternoon. I didn't know the score till the next morning when I sneaked in my classroom to look at the papers for the score before breakfast but I was "caught" by the house matron and I was grounded for a week and I missed the school talent contest show which I was looking forward to going to! :(

Would have made an absolutely monster of a Wetherspoons that!

Joking aside it’s criminal that buildings such as this were demolished. Sheffield lacks the grandiose old buildings, of other major cities, largely thanks to the Luftwaffe. But the council having demolished so many of this is a shame. This building would still make an excellent market place.

Fair enough, the trauma of missing the talent contest has clearly affected your usually reliable memory.

It was Boxing Day, too. I wonder if some of the players were still a little worse for wear?
My grandad told me the euphemism was ‘too much Christmas pudding’ and yes, they would have been like a Sunday league side after a stag night. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two threw up at half time (rather than on the touch line like we all used to).

Can't seem to think where it is as its quite a steep section of the street. My rough guesses would be at the bottom of Industry Road which is just opposite Barnadiston or Wilfrid Road (if there ever was houses on there and then may have been demolished).

Although Darnall has some hilly parts I like to think it's one of the biggest areas in Sheffield that is flat.
Could it be the bottom of Poole Road?
