Youth caps. Never played for our first teamEngland caps, football?
Out of interest , whereabouts on Whitley Lane was the football pitch ?Bert used to watch Wednesday train at Thorncliffe, Swan had a Ford Zephyr.
Also, when Swan was banned from all forms of organised football Bert saw him playing for a pub team (illegally) on the sloping pitch at Whitley Lane, Ecclesfield. You can imagine how much better he was than the others.
Bottom of Whitley Lane, 200 yds up, it was Batchelors Sports Ground. A cricket pitch and two football pitches, one of them extremely sloping.Out of interest , whereabouts on Whitley Lane was the football pitch ?
I know that Whitley Hall CC's ( my old club) first pitch was just below the Norfolk at the top of the hill .
Didn't go to this game, was out of Sheffield at this time, but it makes good reading. Peter Swan never seemed to get the better 'Doc' over the times they opposed. Admit I didn't know much about Swan but never thought he was more than a decent Div. 1 centre half. Remember seeing him, on a newsreel (Pathe), playing for England. Top R hand corner league table showing, Blades just behind Owls, wonder if the win placed Blades above Owls?
Bert's just found a few more in the depths of the Bert garage. View attachment 54118 View attachment 54117
Bert went to the game, a friend of his was playing for United, it would be around 1973. It wasn't the same Peter Ward, but note the 2 future England internationals playing for Forest. What year was the Youth Cup match at Forest ?
Just wondering if the Peter Ward at No:10 for us was the same one that went on to score a few goals for Brighton, late '70s ?
What a legend that man was, people talk these days about Booker, Coutts etc being legends, they aren't even on the same planet as Alan Woodward.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...t-and-became-the-blades-leading-10456845.htmlAs a newer Blade, has been awesome to read up and learn more about the club's history and particularly players such as Woodward,Currie, etc.
If Swan played there, they will make a change from a donkey on there...Bottom of Whitley Lane, 200 yds up, it was Batchelors Sports Ground. A cricket pitch and two football pitches, one of them extremely sloping.
There are horses on there now.
Is that the year Chelsea went down?
YesKember, Webb, Harris, Currie, Eddy and Hollins?
No. the photo was Sept 1973. We won 2-1. They went down in 1975 with Luton and Carlisle
