Four Lanes Ends (before it became the Meadowhead roundabout) looking towards Dronfield in the 1960s

Day's the bakers was next to Mitchell's and there was a hardware store at the end on the Crann's side. Next to that was a shop that sold sweets and cards (Crakerjack possibly?). I remember the garage as Alan Ponds in the 70s, Andrea Taunton was at Norton Free possibly in my brother's year.
I had a paper round at the newsagents for a few years, still pass that way on my way home from work sometimes.

This is an old map showing Four Lane Ends with Coal Aston airfield. When I went to Jordanthorpe there was still workshops from the airfield. Dyche Lane had 90deg left and right bends with a farm house long since gone when the road was straightened. We did cross country from school up to Coal Aston, across some fields, coming out opposite the football ground and back up Chesterfield Rd with hardly a car in sight.

In the days of Sheffield pubs closing every night at 10.30pm we used to have a final drink in the Batemoor or Jordanthorpe on a Friday night and then walk up Dyche Lane to Coal Aston and get a few drinks up to 11.00pm in the Chequers.

I think Sheffield Licensing magistrates used to be run by the Temperance Society.

Another Berni Inn on the left hand side - the Norton. Prawn cocktails and Black Forest gateau. Brocklehurst garage on the right hand side. Used to have an advert on television......

'You can always trust the car you buy from Brocklehurts of Sheffield'.

Brocklehursts very flash car dealership on the junction.

I remember a trip to Brocklehurst was a 'big' Sunday outing. At the back of the showroom, they had a brilliant model railway to entice dads to bring their kids in. However, I seem to remember it was around the Chesterfield area. Did Brocklehurst have a branch there as well?

Ditto for me. We used to drive to the Phoenix, or Queens Head, Swan, Bridge Inn or as far as the Butcher's Arms at Marsh Lane. The driver would match us pint for pint. God knows how we we got home safe.
If I recall correctly the later closing was only for Friday and Saturday nights.

I started drinking in the early 1970's. I'm sure at that time the 10.30pm 'calling time' was for every night. It was some time after this that the Fridays and Saturdays were changed to 11.00pm.

Yes. Sheffield closing time was 10.30 every night but the more enlightened burghers of Derbyshire set closing time at 11.00pm at the weekend. That's why we nipped over the border for the extra half hour.

Still get to the Swan periodically for a pint and meat and tater pie, but not the heavy sessions of the past. I noted recently that the Butcher's at Marsh Lane looks permanently closed after closing and re-opening several times over the last few years. Shame.

Wasn’t it because Sheffield pubs opened earlier for steelworkers knocking off?
I think 10.30 closing was pretty much countrywide but there is anecdotal evidence of the steelworks opening up early for when the night shift knocked off. Not sure if it is true, but I'm sure someone will know for sure.

I find that sad, was in years gone by, a good pub and the ale was excellent +.Talking '66 to 74ish. Sunday lunch family crawl, age range 1890-1947 very happy days. Roaring coal fire in winter, non of your smokeless, with J Smiths bitter as good as any Magnet in town. Always supped bitter there, Magnet else where. Hey Hoe time waits for no one, is it progress ?

And then they reduced the bus fares to 2p and put the housing rates up in Sheffield to pay for it and thousands of Dee-Dars fled to come and live over the border in Derbyshire. The rest, as they say, is history.

Higher Council Tax in NE Derbys than Sheffield for a few years now.

I used to live in Dronfield and we often went over the border to get an extra half hour. I think Steel works pubs pretty much had their own opening hours If they were on site and they opened to suit the shift. Wasn't there a pub in Sammy Fox's? I started supping in the 60's, but in the 40's I think pubs closed at 10pm.

I remember drinking down in the east end in the seventies and just before shift change (10pm) the lasses behind the bar would start pulling pints to load the bar up with beer ready for the stampede.
