The Meadowhead picture was taken in 1966 according to Picture Sheffield so the roundabout was built sometime after that.
I can recall there being a skittle alley in the Norton, at the the Norton Lane entrance, before it went in one of its many refurbishments.

I am uncertain if that is Rowlinson as it is so long ago.
Do not think it Low Edges school.

My daughter was born in 1966 and I know it was like that, no island then.

Sometime after a life time the memory can be a fuzzy round the edges particularly after living in various places.

One thing a\always remains loud and clear, once a Blade always a Blade.

The first photo is taken from the position of the caretakers house on the lower middle of the above picture. The white strip on the right hand side of the first photo is a balcony behind which was the staff room. On the far left of the first photo and the top left hand corner of the above photo is one of the refectories.

Dyche Lane runs along the bottom of the aerial shot and Norton Lane runs up the far left corner.

I also walked up that drive from the early sixties to when I left in 1970 so I'm sure it's Rowlinson Tech.

Not an old photo so much as an old story, my Dad got John Garrett's book for Christmas "In Other Words" and was telling me about Arthur Bottom.

Arthur and my Dad both worked for my Granddad's cutlery firm on Arundel Street in the 70’s and he was saying how lovely he was, he used to solder handles onto the knives, apparently had a lovely singing voice and was fed up of football and would only talk about fishing.

He used to work on a machine underneath a small hole in the ceiling which a bloke called Harry who worked upstairs would often sweep all the dust down much to Arthur's displeasure.

He drove a Ford Prefect at the time and one was once dumped outside the factory, Arthur saw it, noted it had better seats in it than his and spent a couple of hours taking the seats out of it, putting them in his and cobbing his in the skip.

Here's a picture to meet thread requirements, couldn't find any of him playing for us though but this is Bramall Lane I think, before my time though so could be wrong.

Edit: Not Bramall Lane, says it is though. Anyway, it's apparently Notts County Vs York City in an FA Cup Quarter Final.

Others have mentioned the Berni Inn and Brocklehurst Motors and from the deepest recesses of a once bright(ish) mind I’ve come up with some other names which, if nothing else, tell us what a thriving shopping centre Meadowhead once was and many others like it:

Clements. Thos Clements, to give it its full title. A sort of general grocery store, next to The Norton. I think it became a Pricekene in the seventies.

Tauntons Chemists. On the corner of Hunstone Avenue.

Cranns fish and chip shop. On the other corner of Hunstone Avenue.

Cranns shop, next door to the chippie. It was quite big inside but I can’t remember what it sold. There was a cafe on the floor above.

Pembertons Newsagent and Post Office across the road. I spent many an early Saturday evening queuing outside for a Green ‘Un, peering down the hill towards Woodseats for a sight of one of the vans.

Mitchells. It’s still there, of course, as a wine merchants. It was an off-licence back then. Mitchells had another business there but I can’t remember if it was a butchers shop or a greengrocers.

There was a Barclays Bank branch, some sort of insurance brokers, a travel agency (I think). There was also a tobacconists next door to Cranns and a haberdashery shop next door to that. I seem to recall a flower shop as well.

Brocklehurst Motors became an Alan Pond petrol station in the seventies. I had a summer job there for a couple of years.

This article is principally about his grandson Bill (his Dad was a coach who perished in the crash) .... the grandson was dragged bag from a footballer's lifestyle in Turin to a coal-board house in Rossington .... which, unsurprisingly is a source of great regret to him ....

lovely to see Meadow Lane like it used to be. I think we must have played there in 1989 or 1990 - the ground was the same then as it was in those newsreels, a real throwback even then - wasn't there a big terrace like the one in the picture but with an arched roof all the way along t'other side. Looks like they could squeeze 40 000 or so in, and it must have been one of the biggest crowds York ever played in front of - presumably there were more at the semi?

By the time we played them in the FA Cup in the 1990s?, County's ground was largely rebuilt .... we were behind but scored very late on to win it I seem to remember, my Doncaster lot wanted away, but I kept the faith and watched it to the end having a good eye for a football game.

Having enlarged the image I am certain that is Rowlinson, gates on left of Dych Lane and second gate leading direct to cycle shed where I used to park my bike near to hall window.
I still have the bike after all these days in my shed.

Yes, there was definitely a Chesterfield showroom. I think the owner’s name was Ernest Brocklehurst.

Funnily enough, we lived on Brocklehurst Avenue at Norton. I’m not aware that it was named after him or his family but it’s possible, I suppose.

Yes the Chesterfield dealership was the largest of the two.
Don't recall any model railway but probably did not visit.

Yes, you are right. The building is Canada House and was home of the Sheffield Gas Company. We lost the buildings beyond Barclays when Commercial Street was made into a dual carriageway.

Main memory of the day for me was breaking down on M1 on way home and AA relay taking an age to turn up and rescue us.

I worked for a short period of time at that Barclays branch about 1974.

I was downstairs in some kind of vault counting coins into the plastic money bags for all the branches.

Probably the first time I came across CCTV. The cameras were focussed on that street at the back that leads up to the Penny Black. CCTV cameras are all over the place nowadays.
