Sorry about that SEB. I suppose we are the Premier League and you are the National League. I think we forget, or have become blasé, about how good the selection is here. You have my deepest sympathy ;)

I have two sons living in Sheffield, who think it's hilarious to message poor old Dad with pictures of the latest ale offerings in the Blake, or the Hallamshire, or Closed Shop or any other establishment within the City boundaries they decide to visit. Those two chuffs aren't blasé, they positively gloat.

I need more than sympathy!

I’m very sorry indeed to hear of the death of the brilliant Peter Thompson at the age of 76. One of my favourite players of all time. I last saw him in action for Bolton at Everton in a League Cup semi-final in 1976-77 when I was at Liverpool University. He was in the twilight of his career but he was, as always, outstanding. Loved the way he played football.

If there was one major critiscm of that 70's side then it was its inconsistency.
Agree. 1973-74 season has to be the most inconsistent . Lost to Burnley, Wolves, Birmingham, Southampton, Norwich and Coventry (did the double over us) but we won at Man U, Man City, Spurs, Chelsea, thrashed Arsenal and Derby at home also beating Liverpool!

Len Badger said Thompson was the most difficult opponent he has played against

Look at those Gola boots, first pair I had were those beauties! :)

Had many a great night at the Rex Cinema. Judith Greasley once famously told me very loudly to "Behave" when I put my arm around her and most if not all the congregation turned to see what was going on! Our next date (yes there was one but only one) was the Texaco cup game against Dundee United when it pissed down and which was an uninspiring 0-0 draw (Silent to correct me if my mind is yet again playing tricks). She wasn't impressed.

I bore witness to that in a 1968 league cup tie at Anfield. Thompson ran Len ragged as the scousers inflicted a 4-0 beating upon us.
Then did us over on way back to coaches as we risked a dark short cut through Stanley Park.

I can remember that game like it was yesterday.

Bradshaw vs Pearce

A young Roy Keane showing the potential of a class player .

One of those atmospheres where you can almost see the electricity sparking in the air as 20-odd thousand of us willed us to win - and it was a real ding-dong game.

The relief at the final whistle.

Happy memories!

Wasn't this a rearranged game. Am sure bad weather postponed the original fixture

Sweet Baby Jesus and the orphans, I'd weep for a pub in East London serving that line-up of generic ales.
As I said in another thread, you in Sheffield have never had it so good!

I'd best not post a photo of the beers on tap at the Sheaf View then :).

Or the 14 Cask/Keg ales at The Stag :D

As I've said elsewhere, Tom, I have two sons living in Sheffield who think it rather mirthful to regularly send dear old Dad photographs of long lines of pumps in various Sheffield establishments. I think I have one of the Sheaf...gits!
