Abbeydale_Cinema_-_Abbeydale_Road_26-03-06.jpg Abbeydale_Cinema_-_Abbeydale_Road_26-03-06.jpg
Heeley Green cinema, often used to go there as a young lad .
We were well served by cinemas in the area, Abbeydale Heeley Coliseum, Heeley Palace ,Woodseats Palace, and the Chantry.
Very popular were cinemas before the days of televisions, always used to get the Pathe news for the week, the main film and in addition a second support film.
Ladies with torches who showed you to your seat and then came round in the intervals selling ice cream etc if you were lucky to be able to afford them.

I can still see the queue outside the Abbeydale with the commissioner on duty controlling the queues who had a look of Arthur Askey about him.
Good night out as apart from watching the Blades there was little else to do.
Saw my first James Bond film at the Abbeydale in 1963.

How the world has changed.

Saw my first films at Abbeydale Cinema KB...can't remember which film tbh...My Mum was from Heeley,so used to often tell me about going to Heeley Picture Palace and Colly back in the day.

I remember going to see Stardust with David Essex at abbeydale. I used to get a lot of hassle on Sunday nights round there when it was KGBs having Northern soul night ,being a punk.
My Mum and dad said they had their first date in a Sarsaparilla bar across the road.
If you go onto Streetview and look at the row of shops on the town side of the old Abbeydale Cinema (same side) there is a shop called Dronfield Antiques. At the bottom of the right hand window it says "Temperance Bar." That's where they had their date. I used to go there myself as a lad after a session (swimming, before anybody says anything) at Heeley Baths.

Lucky owd you bein a mate of David Essex and goin t'flicks wi im.

We were knocked out of the Cup in the 3rd round away at Portsmouth in 1971. Jan 1970 Derby beat us 3-0 I was there at the time.
1970 it was then, the same day as Wednesday got beat by 4th division Scunthorpe as Bert's memory has informed him.

Yes, I remember my dad had one of those snorkels with the ball in it. I guess he’d bought it around that time because I never saw him use it so the last time he did must have been before I was born.

Did you have a boarded out cellar at home?

On that side of Abbeydale Road just below towards town was the House of Barrington - Hobot - shop.

In the downstairs ballroom of the building was where the soul all nighters were, seventies onwards.

Keegan played for Scunny that day. Not sure if Ray Clemence played or if he'd moved to Liverpool. They had another player Nigel Cassidy who I think we were often linked with.

I remember the Sarsaparilla bar which my memory recalls it as being on the same side as the Abbeydale, on the right of the cinema as one came out.
But then memories do play tricks on us.
Felt very big going in the bar but we did go to the Abbeydale often as my future wife lived at that time in Sandford Grove Road.

. A schoolmate lived on Sandford Grove Rd too, his Dad Len Doherty was a well known journalist on the Star when they had proper journos ,I remember he worked abroad a lot and was injured in a terrorist attack in Munich.
My dad also moved into a bedsit on Sandford Grove rd when he split from my Mum

Go on Google Earth and search for Abbeydale Picture House, then use street view and move down the road toward town. There is a white double fronted antique shop on the right just below the cinema. Underneath the window with ' Antiques ' painted above it it says 'Temperance Bar ' .There's probably a way that I could link to it but I have no idea how.

I lived in the area and went in a few times with my mates when we were kids. They served sarsaparilla in those pint pots with the handles. We used to drink it making out we were drinking beer. Only problem being it tasted crap!
