Hambleton House is an art deco building with plenty of history and once pulled down would be replaced by nothing of equivalent importance. It should have been listed. You can't wait until there is only one example left before listing it, or wait until enough time has passed for it to be important, because it will be gone. You have to have foresight with these things, which clearly Sheffield has never had. Naturally architecture is subjective, but it's difficult to argue that the co-op building from the outside isn't an eye-sore.

Genuinely feel angry looking at the pictures on this thread sometimes, at all the interesting old buildings that were pulled down and replaced with soulless metal and glass boxes.

They should be doing what they've done with Laycocks near the train station, great old building with a history, made safe and expanded.

The Co-op building needs a wesh, but is actually quite interesting internally and from the bottom of Angel Street, the King Street bit is pretty awful, but so is the rest of King Street.

Hopefully now that it's going to occupied the old town hall will be sorted out and maybe the pub.

There used to be a stuffed cow in that 'domed' window.

That road always reminds me of school swimming lessons with Mr Wall or going to Abbeydale Cinema and having a sasperilla (?) afterwards from the Temperance bar on Abbeydale Road.
I used to go to Mr Wall's class on a Tuesday evening at Heeley Baths followed by fish and chips on the way home. This thread keeps on bringing back the memories.

Mr Wall! Jesus! My swimming teacher at both Heeley Bank and Abbeydale schools.
Jet black brylcreemed hair!

Never got in here but was always fascinated by it.View attachment 37111

Had my first legal pint here. Can't remember much about the place other than pint pots with handles and beer barrels for tables.

I was asked my age that day and could say, with hand on heart, that I was indeed 18. Drinking has never been the same since.

heh.. had a similar experience. never got asked until my 'actual' 18th birthday

I always have a little chuckle to myself when I walk past the Walkabout and see the words 'Methodist Chapel' still etched into the rock. A place once devoted to temperance and abstinence now devoted to the most obscene binge drinking and loutishness. The poor fuckers who once used it must be turning in their graves.

Going to this 'Methodist Chapel' on Tuesday (Madchester Albert Hall) if only Sheffield had a venue like this, so much better than the Limit/Leadmill

Tony Robinson did an excellent prog on the Sheffield Pals(First day of the Somme if i remember correctly)where he filmed on the South Stand where he talked about them drilling on the pitch. If you look on google maps just above Redmires, you can still see the outlines of the practice trenches they dug...

For some odd reason took a drive along Attercliffe Road today and saw what was The Dog and Partridge, probably the last time I saw 2 Swedish sisters ‘performing’ in Sheffield...

Or maybe The Hermitage on Sunday afternoons... 1230 and 130 shows i recall..

Enjoy your performance should have a right view on that stage..

Thanks,I'm sure I shall Beast permitting. I saw Agnes Obel there on my first visit, in my top ten live performances and given that I have seen Led Zep,Police,Talking Heads, Dire Straits,Bowie,Fleetwood Mac and some that takes some doing.

Possibly shows my age too :D
