Nothing to do with Sheffield or United, but a glimpse back to when football grounds were ramshackled affairs, cramming people in with no facilities and barely a thought to comfort or possible safety issues. That slightly wonky wooden shed and frame holding up the Golden Goal information is just priceless. This isn't some tinpot ground either, Baseball Ground, early 70s, Derby v Manchester United.

Lob a flare into that lot and the effect would have been something! Must have been first match of the season - there is grass on the pitch.

I've got a feeling it might have been a Watney Cup match. Silent Blade will have no idea on this one. I can name the players though ;)

Sadler ,Ure ,Charlton Kidd Stiles ,don't know. Love how the golden goal man is wearing a shirt and tie ,shame how things have changed.

Not Gowling on the end is it ?

Derby 4 Man U 1 Watney Cup final 1970. I was at that ground a few days earlier seeing a John McGovern goal beating the Blades in the semi final

Scottish bastard ,always disliked that nob ,thinks hes it.
Crerand told me to get out of Man U's team coach 7 weeks after this photo was taken but Nobby Stiles and Ian Ure told him off and allowed me to carry on taking autographs in the coach. It was after the Blades were playing a reserves match against Man U. My dad always disliked Crerand ever since

The crown on that pitch was such that you're probably missing the first three rows of that terrace in that picture.

You're probably right, Fenners. I went later in the 70s and was stood on terracing down one side of the pitch, right at the front. It sloped from the middle towards both goals quite a bit. Never helped with the drainage though, it was always a bog of a pitch from about mid-September!
