if anyone were to ask me where that stand is (without the teams on the photo), I say Elland Road

(for younger viewers out there, it was customary for BOTH teams to wear their change strips* if there was a colour clash in the FA Cup in those days - that only goes halfway to explaining why Wet Sham were in their away kit playing at the Boleyn Ground)

and they did have sloping adverts at one stage on the John Street side? (after '72 ??) I thought it looked like there was a glass screen at the Shoreham Street end of the stand (plus a bit too much sky showing at that end) but you two are right, it must have been lens flare and steam rising from the crowd.

Same here ,always left with half a can of red stripe and a headache. I played football with Fred Chattoo for a couple of years ,thought he was Tony daley but played more like Arthur. We had a very good mutual friend who was all over the papers , Front page of NOTW when the world cup was in Mexico ,he was attacked by Chelsea NF for standing up to them (he was white)
 
This is the March 1973 match. The heavy pitch and the poor daylight is similar to the conditions in the Brooking/Dearden photo. Photos for the Feb 1972 match showed more daylight and the pitch seemed drier

That photo of the cricket crowd South Essex, the bloke in the dark jacket and the striped tie looking out to Shoreham Street could have been my Dad. He did wear a Yorks CC tie or Sheff Univ. tie on such occasions though me and my Mum think he looks a bit too stout and given my recent sleuth like tendencies on this thread - I'd better pass on it. But he did have ears like that ! and the sartorial elegance runs in the family, I was known to some in Doncaster as "Smart Blade".

Silent, I went riffling through old programmes as a result of our correspondence and a "Lane Line Up" for the Crystal Palace match 7 April '73 shows Dearden in identical kit as he is in photos above...... but Currie's shirt is different, middle stripe is white and the badge seems embroidered straight to the cloth rather than being on a white patch (Unlike the United No.2 behind).

If I were in a 1970s crime flick, they'd pull me off the case for getting too involved - like Dirty Harry......

Screen Shot 2017-01-10 at 00.03.06.png OK, in the seasons, 70-71 to 74 -75, the programme, "Lane Line Up" usually had a photo of the previous home fixture on the cover. Looking through SharrowBlades phenomenally comprehensive collection which is on line at this address

and I very much hope SharrowBlade doesn't mind my having taking some screen shots from it nor advertising his flickr account - forgive me.

it seems to me that of the seasons above, the West Ham photos can only be from 70/71 or 71/72 or 72/73 seasons because the next season we changed to floppy collars as was the fashion.

now, it looks as if in ALL those seasons, we generally played in round neck shirts with a central red stripe.

There is Dearden, playing against West Ham wearing a shirt that certainly had a central red stripe on the back and I'm guessing on the front too looking at t'other players. This is the game on March 10th 1973. So this could be the game that the colour photo of Dearden and Brooking was taken at.

This next programme has a photo from the corresponding match almost exactly a year beforeScreen Shot 2017-01-10 at 00.01.58.png

it shows Billy Dearden against West Ham, but in the shirt with a central WHITE stripe and possibly an embroidered badge. We didn't play them the previous season as we were in the wrong division.

But in that 1972/73 season, it looks as though we usually played in the shirt with a RED central stripe, we brought out the ones with the white stripe and the properly embroidered badge for important occasions and probably when the others were in the wash (after an away match v Derby when you would have to soak them for a week??)

And also when there was an important visitor like for instance the Israeli Minister of War ( and boy was he into waging wars.)

Can I just say a big thank you for all the contributions to this thread. Some marvelous memories, especially the 'power cut' match when we beat West Ham. I wagged school to go to the game and told the teacher I'd been off with a bad nosebleed. He asked if I'd got it from being hit by the ball as his wife was at the game and saw me jumping up and down when we scored.

Didn't get done for wagging it, he was a huge Norwich fan so he understood but he did tell me not to lie in future. A good lesson learned.

My kind headmaster allowed me the afternoon off school for the match and also for the Wendy v Santos match in the previous week. As my dad was at work for those matches, his friends took me to both matches

Assuming that's at the Lane, that's the only Test ever played there, on 3, 4 and 5 June 1902.

The test was not a financial success and there were stoppages for bad light, and we never hosted another.

The other batsman is Reggie Duff, who opened with Trumper. Duff was dead less than 10 years later, drinking himself to an early grave.

Ah, I thought I recognised the badge on the "baggy green" of the other batsman. But I didn't recognise him. For the uninitiated (as if there are any on here), this is the most famous photograph of Trumper ..... one of the greatest images of cricket ever.

same bat John - only two gloves between the pair of them. Sad tale of Duff, but its always an occupational hazard for anyone whose Dad owns a brewery.

Monday night was punk night in the early 80s, (no Northern Soul to be seen). Orgainised by Pax/Rat Records who had a shop at the backn of the Leadmill on Suffolk Road.

Some brilliant nights seeing Vice Squad, Discharge, Infa Riot, Mau Maus (from Killamarsh) and many many others. Only a short sprint down to Pond Street to catch the last Dinno bus.

Pax started out as Limited Edition Records, then became Aardvark before Pax. First signing was legendary Sheffield band Artery. Monday's started off as local bands night before attracting bands know nationwide.

I'd been to see Sham69 in April and that was a riot (literally, not metaphorically). Fights all night between larges gangs of skinheads and smaller groups of punks. We were 16 year old herberts in Harringtons, trying to keep out of the way. Absolute bedlam all through the gig with stage invasions, NF/BNP and loads of trouble outside afterwards.

The Undertones was a few weeks later and was fantastic. A great band playing good music and a really good atmosphere. Talk about chalk and cheese!

Sounds about right, it was a warm evening so May/June sounds correct. I saw Sham 69 in 1978, local bands supporting; first on was The ? (that was their name), who went on to become Artery, second on was Reactor, singer dressed like someone from "A Clockwork Orange", they changed their name to Molodoy and had Clockwork Orange type poster/flyers around Sheffield.

Sham 69 headlined, this was before the Skinhead following really, so no trouble.
