Fitzalan Square
I remember The Classic, Barclays, Wigfalls and the Post Office.
Blimey, the saddest loss is that Barclays Bank building on the corner (being Doncaster I hadn't realised what had been demolished)..... I worried that the old Post Office building might have gone too but Hallam Univ. have it now and its safe. Its sad as hell that the Post Office lost ANY pride in its appearance when they decided to be 'commercial'... the dereliction of thinking that its OK to relocate to a filthy Coop basement says it all. It was a national institution now its a fcuking franchise, deliberately run down and asset stripped. (& you can't blame losing that Bank on the Luftwaffe either.)
I think Fitzalan stands to gain a great deal by having the students around...
Recently going from left to right on you photo South Essex, the line up was:
Cooplands, Pawnbroker, Amusement Arcade, Bookie, Bookie wasn't it. It was like the backdrop for some 21st Century, "Rake's Progress" without the fun of a Pub and a Brothel thrown in.
Top of Banner Cross

It was probably owned by a bloke who had a scrap yard down Attercliffe and had a four berth caravan at Chapel St Leonards. What a car that is in the third photo. It's the car an RAF officer would take his girlfriend out in before downing a few Messerschmitts.

Does anyone remember the jennel around the back ,think it was called Jew lane. Get a lass off Park hill it was always good for a 'snogging session' on the way home .Late 60s, early 70s I would guess. It went to widen the road, which is a shame when you look back at it as a building.
