Thank you SEB, I think this was the remains of their final premises on the Wicker, having gone bust in their palatial home just around the corner - they started life at the top of Howard Street.
Relied chiefly on catalogue selling on credit, but got slaughtered when they didn't follow the internet......

Reading the signs on the front, they still have the big premises on Stanley Street when this was taken.

Just checked out of interest, they went bust in 2010, but the following year they began an online business, it seems. Never heard from any of them, and the competition is absolutely cut-throat. Hope they've done OK, Harry Peck was a good bloke.

My uncle knew Harry, got all his gear from him. Shame they went tits up!

They did all right for years, but didn't offer a single discount, all at list price - you could have a waggle of the rods on their rack, and then go to Steve Calcott or Dave Dawson to buy it at 15/20% off.
Dealers were selling reels at £19.95 and making £0.50 profit, that's how competitive it became.

Caught that bus for a few years

Never particularly liked or watched speedway, but any mention of it and Ivan Mauger always springs to mind, why that should be I haven't got a clue

He was the 'Pele' of speedway. The first superstar of the sport. I actually knew his mechanic when he was riding for Exeter and met him a few times. Surprised how small he was and quite a quiet guy.

Actually thinking about it, Wimpy was on Fargate. Or is the memory playing tricks?

There was definitely a Wimpy on Pinstone Street. Coming in from Norton Lees on the No.20 (after the Moor had been pedestrianised), we'd come up Furnival Gate past Redgates, and turn right on to Pinstone Street and there was a Wimpy on the left just before the turning for Cambridge Street.

Mauger was absolutely fantastic at his peak in the early-70s. He was brilliant at Owlerton but he was brilliant everywhere, in truth. I actually missed a United home game against Chelsea in 1972 to go to the World Final at Wembley where Mauger won in front of 88,000 in a run-off with Bernt Persson. Ole Olsen should have won it, though - four wins from five rides but fell in the other. Barry Briggs lost a finger in a crash for which Persson was widely blamed.

Speedway was big in those days. That Tigers team in SEB's picture was a strong one with no real weak links although Reidar Eide never really took to Owlerton. Bob Paulson committed suicide a few years later, sadly.

The best rider I ever saw in Sheffield colours was Jim Airey who packed it in - in this country, at least - in 1971 when absolutely at the peak of his powers. The most consistent fast starter, better even than Mauger, but he wasn't one-dimensional. A very nice guy, too.

It shouldn't take years to get to Low Edges. Did the bus go via Vladivostok?

It was the driver's birthday and he thought he was driving the no. 2.

I think there are still a few 1970#s Daimler Atlanteans out there on their way back.

Not quite the same with the grey and purple FirstBus, is it?

That little inset of Megson crying......

Absolute comedy gold!
