All those people in Fitzalan Square reminds me of the late Saturday nights / early Sunday mornings waiting forever for a taxi.
Deciding against catching the 1.30am bus back up to Lowedges and 'giving it another half hour' (usually a waste of time) in Josephine's, Top Rank etc.

Arriving into Fitzalan Square which looked more like Trafalgar Square on New Years Eve. More often than not decided to walk and about Woodseats managing to flagg down an empty taxi.

Waking up the next day with the words 'never again.'

Must have been about 1985 or 86 and when all the night buses left at 0030 or 0130. The dilemma was whether to walk home or have another pint. Or if it was The Limit at 50 p on Thursday, the £1 bus fare meant two pints, or a pint and chips and beans.

Makes me feel old talking bout late buses, The Limit and a choice between a bus fare and a beer. But what makes me feel really old is remembering the old 2 p bus fare for kids and no bus fare costing, as an adult, more than about 30 p. Amazing stuff!

PS- Full respect to those bus drivers who tolerated so much, full respect.

Every John Lewis around the country is referred to as Coles by the the family String. Always and without exception. Even the 7 year old.

The 0100 buses were definitely running in 73/74 when I was 17/18.

Was that the infamous 'Zulu' match?

Budgie's comments about being under siege from five large black chaps would cause a right shit storm these days.
I think it was that match...I can imagine Ian Porterfield's [?] pre-match team talk instruction..."Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes, lads!".

They was still running in the mid 90s at 0220 from Arundel Gate, although more often than not I used to manage to miss it........

The 42 / 53 to Lowedges ran at 12.30am (for the lightweights) and one at 1.30am.

Everyone would fall asleep hoping they would wake up before their stop. I fell asleep on one occasion after too many Carlsberg Special Brews in Crazy Daisy and ended up at Herries Road garage. Driver nearly had a heart attack when I came downstairs.

Walked back to Fitzalan Square to join the taxi queue which was just as long as it was first time round.

Was Porterfield the boss? I wasn't sure, tbh.
We lost 5-0 and I remember a guy called Stirling getting amongst the goals. I'm pretty sure it we had Bassett as our manager and he made the Zulu comment.
Someone can put this to bed I'm sure

Bassett left Watford in 1988 and then came to us. The Photo with Burridge in was in January 1985. Bassett was at Wimbledon then

That last game of the season at Grimsby when he came over to clap us
I,ll not speak ill of the dead but you know what I mean.
I certainly do mate.

By the way, somebody this afternoon told me to ask you if south paws fish with left handed reels...he's not a fisherman but his brother is.

I thought i'd struck gold with this piccy..as in thinking it was from the Cup game vs the Blades in '59

But unfortunately its from the season before vs Cheltenham.

Still feel its worth posting in on this thread though as its in keeping with the title and harks back to the good old times from the 50s when life was better! :)

In the early 90s ours was fun as it often had members of the Druids North on it and they certainly weren't to be messed with

In the 70's the Blue Angels were the main bike gang in Sheffield.

Here you are Jonny;

These were the days when we had the best city centre shops and Christmas illuminations outside of London. Then complacency crept in.

Bit like the Blades running away with this division and deciding all will be well next year without proper investment.
An old press photo I have. Carlin and Graham Shaw after knocking West Ham out of the cup 2-1 away March 1968. Note Shaw leaving the pitch minus a boot!

Isn't that Bernard Shaw. Graham left in 1967.
