Being a lover of traditional football shirt number I always have a keen eye (and then usually disgust) at the allocation of squad numbers. This year the change in shape looks like we might play with wingers (or close) for the first time in many a year.

This got me thinking, when was the last time that we had a left midfielder / winger who actually wore number 11?

Dane Whitehouse maybe? I feel like he wore 11 in the old Division One once we dropped out of the Premiership, but I was only a nipper back then so could be wrong

He wore number 18 if memory serves me right.

When substitutions were introduced to the game in 1965, the substitute typically took the number 12; when a second substitute was allowed, they wore 14, supersticious lot

Everybody wants sexy, curvy numbers these days…11 is just like two extra stripes. 🤷‍♂️

Since Squad Numbers came in for the EFL (1999/00), Ryan Flynn is probably the closest one we've had.

Players to have the number 11 for us are:

  • Bobby Ford
  • Laurens Ten Huevel
  • Jack Lester
  • Brennan Johnson's Dad
  • Steve Kabba
  • Lee Hendrie
  • David Cotterill
  • Mark Yeates
  • Ryan Flynn
  • Kevin McDonald
  • Jose Baxter
  • Matt Done
  • Clayton Donaldson
  • Ben Woodburn
  • Scott Hogan
  • Callum Robinson
  • Lys Mousset
  • Reda Khadra
  • Benie Traore
  • Ben Brereton-Diaz

I have one of those 1960's/70's, heavy cotton, Northern Ireland shirts with 11 on the back (George Best). It's just two white strips of material stitched on. Exactly as god intended.

Division 1 (current Championship for clarity) didn't have squad numbers back then. It was just 1-11 and 3 subs
He wore 18 as a squad number when the Premier League introduced them in 92/93 season.

Fair enough, but I did state originally that I wasn't talking about the Prem:

A couple of good players in there even if they were not left midfielders. I would be willing to bet there isn’t a number (1-11) that is weaker than that list. Not sure how many of our keepers actually wore 1 mind.

Gil Reece was my favourite player and wore the number 11 with pride, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,squad number

still thought trading him for Alan Warboys was a big mistake
Yes I liked him he was only small but he could leap in the air and out jump most 6 footers he was one of the best headers i have seen in a Blades shirt ,scored some beauties with his head . I think he has past away a few years ago after suffering a long illness ,I think he had to have one of his legs off just before he died if i am not mistaken.
