Not so sharp away from home

He was our top scorer, regardless if we were a high scoring team or not
If you believe the xG modelling McBurnie is a consistently poor finisher:
19/20: 6 goals vs 7.7 (fbref) or 8.07 (understat) or 9.06 (infogol) expected
20/21: 1 goal vs 3.1 (fbref) or 3.55 (understat) or 4.47 (infogol) expected
21/22: no goals vs 2.63 (infogol - neither fbref nor understat cover the Championship)

He should have around 15 goals for us. He has 7.

You're dismissing the fact that we weren't a high scoring team as irrelevant, when it is obviously is not. The context we are discussing is whether McBurnie was effective / prolific. He wasn't. The fact he was top scorer in our team is irrelevant, because the few goals we did score were fairly evenly distributed across the team.

Sharp links up well with Gibbs-White, Sharp has a major influence on the team as captain, this team is in constant need of good leaders. Sharp scores goals.

For me, it’s simple, play Sharp in the remaining games and we have a good chance of making the playoffs, don’t play him and we will finish also rans.

Interesting watch. McBurnie now doesn't look like this. Here he is battling, takes a couple of knock but stays up and his shot is well taken.
It is possible we need a mentality coach more than a technical coach for him

Absolute crud. He scored 6 goals and his limitations were one of the reasons why our attacking output was that of a bottom end premier league team. That 9th place finish revolves around us being a top 4/top 6 level defensive team with England call up level performances from Henderson and Jack O’Connell.

Even playing for a team that was full of confidence and motivation his stats were consistently amongst the poorest in the league.
The only thing he achieved good stats for was winning headers, the vast majority of which went to absolutely no one.

How many did Sharp get that season ?

No ….

You just need to play him as was the problem with Brewster and now jebbison

Either play them or sell them

No wonder McBurnie doesn’t get fit often he spends too much time creating threads like this
Question is the creator of this post Ollie himself?
I reckon he's like that crazed fan from Im Alan Partridge "i've got your face tattoed on my back Oli, I fainted 5 times whilst it was being done" 🤣🤣

derekacorah has schooled you on this before.

2019/20:
McBurnie: 6 league goals in 2,118 minutes. 0.25 goals per 90 minutes
Sharp: 3 league goals in 1,047 minutes. 0.26 goals per 90 minutes

For completeness...

2018/19 Championship
McBurnie: 22 league goals in 3,414 minutes. 0.58 goals per 90 minutes
Sharp: 23 league goals in 3,026 minutes. 0.63 goals per 90 minutes

2020/21 Premier League
McBurnie: 1 league goal in 1,316 minutes. 0.07 goals per 90 minutes
Sharp: 3 league goals in 728 minutes. 0.37 goals per 90 minutes. You have a hard on for excluding penalties so doing that leaves 1 goal in 728 minutes which is still 0.12 goals per 90 minutes.

2021/22 Championship
McBurnie: 0 league goals in 776 minutes. 0.00 goals per 90 minutes
Sharp: 14 league goals in 2,614 minutes. 0.48 goals per 90 minutes (11 excluding penalties, 0.38 goals per 90 minutes)

Assuming he plays every minute in every one of the remaining 9 games McBurnie would need to score 8.5 goals to get level with Sharp's goals-per-game record this season. Exclude penalties and he still needs 6.7 goals to match Sharp. What I'm saying is that McBurnie needs to score more in his next 9 games than he has in his United career to date to get level with the goalscoring output of William Louis Sharp.

It's just a daft conversation. We have one fit striker Billy Sharp. We have another fit striker Jebbison, who most of us have barely seen play at this level or any other. If we had another striker available and fit to play 90 minutes, even Mchickendelight, I think most people would agree we need to give Sharp a break occasionally, but.....

Is it worth keeping sharp fresh for the home games and keeping him on the bench to bring on in away games ?

After watching the games recently I don’t think it’s worth playing bill in away games we clearly lack any threat on the counter and struggle with a focal point up front which leads us to get dominated when we shouldn’t as we can’t keep the ball 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Aswell as this his goal scoring record away is much worse than at home he has 3 goals in 20 apps away from home this season (from open play) opposed to 8 in 17 at home

I would either play Mcburnie who is much more of a target man and can hold up the ball or Jebbison who is more athletic

*Puts tin hat on
🙈

I don't think McBurnie is as bad as some are making out, his first season here he had some good games, the Brighton away game before Christmas he was excellent. I guess having 4k Blades fans singing your name for most of the game sort of helps your confidence too. Compare him to Brewster, the fans stuck with Brewster when he was on a similar run and he was just starting to come good before injury. But it's gone the other way with most of the fans and McBurnie. Personally, I think there's a decent striker there, and in the past he has been a particular thorn in United's side for Swansea and Barnsley, however I just think he's at the wrong club for him. For all involved it'll probably be best if he departs the Lane in the summer.

To answer the OP, there's some credence (clear water revival) to giving McBurnie a start so Billy can have a rest. He might want to play in all the games and he's clearly our number one striker (the way it's going he's virtually the only fit striker) but he's 36 year old and to play two games a week is stretching it. It's not the daftest idea in the world (that would be Berge at right wing back) to give McBurnie the odd away start (where the away following are more likely to back anyone in a red and white shirt).

Hecky has to manage the player's fitness with so many games this year, same with Egan, he's played in nearly all of them (plus internationals), so he could probably do with the odd break now and again. Unfortunately, the options at the minute are a bit limited.

More per game than Mcburnie did that’s a fact. One of the biggest mistakes that season was Robinson and then Mcburnie being given opportunities ahead of Sharp.

We finished 9th in the prem that’s the best we’ve done in 30years 🤣🤣🤣

Mcburnie isn’t more of a target man, Sharp is 10 ten times better at making the ball stick in the final third.

In fact, instead of (lazily and sometimes if I wonder deliberately) giving away free kicks to make it look like he’s done something and winning headers that go to fucking no one, please tell me ANYTHING that Mcburnie does outside the box as good as Sharp.

We’re not even comparing him based on his goal scoring and still left in disbelief as to how £20m of our once in generation premier league money went on this useless fucking goon.
Whilst I'll admit he's just not got going this season or really last he really isn't that bad at all.

In fact he will make us eat our own words whether that's here or if he moves on. He's only 23 and is a good player.

He's become the scape goat, maybe rightfully so but he gets blamed for..... getting covid, getting a dead leg, not scoring, us conceding if he's on the pitch etc.

Sharp couldn't hit a barn door when he returned under Robson. Brewster only started to look sharper not long before his injury. It's not an exact science.
But we weren't the only one's after McBurnie for £17.5m. And he'd just finished that season with 23 goals.

Joint top scorer in a best season in the past 30 years mogs 👍

So whilst I agree he has been poor the past year down to a lot of things he hasn’t been useless as he shown he was a very decent premier league striker whilst with us
Nope he had a decent 3/4 months that’s all playing in a team when everyone around him played the best football of their career
