Is this a surprise?

There's an element of Wilder stirring the pot a bit with publically stating it, but it can't come as a shocking new revelation. That said, I don't think we could afford Madine and Hogan even if the ownership issue was resolved. Assuming they only want half their money back that would be £9m. If we're in the same division next season we wouldn't pay that and if we get promoted we almost certainly wouldn't want Madine and unless Hogan finds Brentford form we'd be looking for better. As I said, a bit of pot stirring.
 
It's only a new revelation as far as these particular players are concerned. Wilder is already on the record saying he's having to build the club in a way that he doesn't like due to the ownership issue. The comment in the opening post is just the proof in the pudding:
“Concentrating on loans takes us down a different route. I would rather go on the longer term view – the club knows that – but we have to get the right player".

It’s hard to agree a fee for Hogan anyway, he cost 12 million 2 years ago and Villa aren’t going to accept what we’d (rightfully) offer given his recent record with injuries - I’m not going to lambast the owners for that. See how he does for the rest of the season.

I think we may have shopped in a different market. Players who require a transfer fee within our reach who aren't on the type of money Hogan is. I'm thinking more the Waghorn and Freeman bids that we put in during the summer.We'll never know completely, though, unless Wilder puts his comments into more context. Obviously it's also effecting outgoings as he couldn't sell Clarke without knowing the situation in the summer.
 
I do believe this is Wilders last transfer window here unfortunately unless we go up.

The big teams must be wanting him now as there manager.
 
CW was being honest about the situation when asked a question by Giddings. Until the ownership dispute is resolved he can't plan beyond the end of the season as the funds aren't there.That means no permanent transfers for the immediate future and the reason why we've gone down the route of loans this window. Also depends what division we are in next season and whether there is a definitive ruling following the Court Hearing in May. In short he's made the best of what he's had this window.

It also depends on Villa’s situation, Hogan will have 2 years left on his contract at the end of the season. Assuming he’s on £50k a week, that’s £5.2m!

Villa might want to claw back as much of his fee as possible, but they also might think it’s better to get him off the wage bill and bank a smaller fee such as £3m - £4m.

A lot will obviously depend on how well he performs with us.

That's the thing isn't it. I think we're the most expansive, creative side he'll have played in since then. If he can have some fortune as far as injuries are concerned he could be a brilliant addition.

At Villa, they often played one up top in a defensive system under Bruce football, he rarely got a look in.

This is a side who played a back 5 consisting of a right back, a right back at centre back and left back, a centre back and a centre mid. It was hardly creative, in the slightest - whack it to Grealish or Adomah and hope for the best...
 
The ownership struggle is a farce but combining both their wealth, and more importantly their liquid cash, they are not rich owners by football standards.

At least something is happening to give Wilder are fair crack under the restraints of the club's finances compared to the wealth of some of those clubs around us.
 



Just got to ignore the twatish greedy bastard owners trying to out manoeuvre each other and put our faith in the players and manager.

Was about to say the same. I recall Wilder also saying that the budget wasn't enough to improve the squad (with permanent players) and therefore loans are a better option. If we do go up then we may will probably need to upgrade on all of current forwards, although saying that, both Madine and Hogan are quality and if we do want to sign them (which will probably only happen if we go up) then we can still do that. If we don't go up then we can re-assess in the summer, and signing Hogan now would be a risk because of his injury record in my view.

So in my view, there's positives and negatives to this. Anyone remember Akinbiyi and Horsefield for example!
 
Just wondering whether there are any FA rules preventing a club from fielding an entire team of loanees.

There are some clubs who have virtually given up on a youth policy and just rely on the transfer market to bring in players. Could the loan system be a cheapjack extension of this ?

Which big teams ?
Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool ?

A Premier League club won't take a chance on him whilst there are managers with more vowels in their names available, and where can he go in the Championship that will be any better

Half the Championship clubs of similar size to us are heading for embargoes and possibly points deductions in the next 12-18 months

I wouldn’t want them to be permanent at this stage, let them prove themselves first, and looking at the Championship January transfer listing, it looks like most clubs feel the same way.

Even now we'd possibly have to commit ourselves to £5-6m to get them both at what happened to to Pigs with Rhodes. Add to that that Wilder might not think they’re good enough if we did go up and so it’s a win-win surely?

Why would a PL team take such a huge risk on Wilder? His cv is totally irrelevant and poor for PL football. PL league clubs have riches and don’t need to take any risk, hence why even Warnock was never offered a job by any PL club.

However he’s proving himself capable in the Championship but there aren’t many clubs bigger than us in this league.

Of course in league 1 and league 2 he can name his club but he wouldn’t go down to that league.
 
I'm not sure why this would prevent us selling Clarke?!
