Norwood. Great with the Mitre ball, average at best with the Nike and woeful with the Puma. That about cover it?

Norwood got an assist v Luton.

both goals v Peterborough were I'd say "indirect assists". First one he put it into the area for defender to make mistake an knock it to Sharp. 2nd goal was his corner headed down by Basham to deflect into the net.

BTW - Norwood v Peterborough was absolutely fantastic

So more, 'defensive errors' than 'Norwood magic' then?

i agree, we cant forget how woeful and ineffective he really is when an opponent is running past him. 1 thing that does annoy about him is he's always passing the responsibility. Pointing for other players to mark others etc. Stop pointing, pull your socks up and go make a tackle.

Using stats as a sole line of argument is a nonsense.

Norwood was exceptional for a couple of years, then went off the boil massively (along with the rest of the squad), but has shown signs of improvement in the last couple of months since Hecky took charge. Is he back to his best, probably not.

However he was written off by a lot on here, me included. However, whilst he has his limitations at the moment he's making positive contributions to a team in good form. Whether its cause or effect, when he plays well, we look better as a team

Keep playing like he is doing and he'll play a big part of how we do this season.

Quite simple really.

Norwood is always good when teams sit off us and play lines in defence and midfield (as P'boro did), and as a reminder when we played Spurs away in season 1 Prem - that was the ideal situation of where teams sat off us then and he looked great.

Teams suss out Norwood and the clever ones sit a player on him - that's when he struggles. Give him time and space and he'll ping balls all day long.

Now we've gone to 3 at the back - Egan is protecting Norwood again and it makes him more effective again as he doesn't have to be as defensive minded any more. It works for Norwood, it works for United. It makes me cross that Slav said in pre-season he was going to play with a 4 - the management should have told him to fuck off and stick with our philosophy of 3 at the back.

No agenda.

Was it Norwood's technical ability or individual errors which led to the goals? Simple question.

He put the balls in the right areas for them to make the mistakes. Sharps goal was a bit of a hit and hope granted, but the corner swung in to Basham was a beauty. The corner should go down as an assist for me. Shame bashams header wasn't on target as it would've been

He was absolutely sensational for us for 18 months. His long passing opened up attacking avenues we'd never had and his calm leadership was vital, especially in the promotion run in.

Let's not pretend that he's not contributed
Absolutely. He dropped off more than most last season when he looked awful but keeps showing for the ball when his midfield colleagues are hiding away. Still deserves a starting place for me

He’s more than just assists and goals - I’d love to see how many passages of attacking play he starts.

(yes, I know he’s prone to the odd mistake)
Also, he's involved in many a goal that he doesn't assist.

For example, Lowe's goal against Blackburn? It's his ball that Anel runs onto and squares for Lowe to score. It's a fantastic ball that won't appear on any stat website. Great movement from Anel BTW, and that perhaps explains why Norwood looks a better player this year. When other players, are making runs and giving him options he "makes us tick". When we are static and teams are "getting at us", he's prone to looking ineffective and weak.

3 assists and 1 goal so far this season.
Player I wouldn’t really expect too many assists from either, I definitely think he could chip in with a few more goals though with how well he can strike a ball.

He’s such a good player for our team & system. We’re better when he plays regardless of how frustrating you find him at times

I'd love to see the stats on how many times he loses possession/fouls an opponent within striking distance of our goal.
As mentioned earlier in the thread Norwood is great when no-one puts him under pressure and a liability when they do. That's akin to being a great boxer if your opponent dosen't hit you back but not very good when they do.

Just to add I like him for his contributions in our shirt and he strikes me as a genuinely good bloke.

Exactly this - however I would add that without protection ( other midfielders with energy and positive wing backs ) he is easily crowded out. But, with the additions this summer he's now more difficult to put two men on as we have players all over the pitch who need doubling up on allowing him to dictate games - a great player, great attitude and probably one of our best additions in the last 30 years

I'm sure he's already taken flowers and choccies round to Max Lowes for being responsible for derailing his season.

End of the day that's the risk.

You show me a guy with an almost perfect pass completion in games and I'll show you a guy who does a lot of passing sideways and back!

Has he apologised for hurting Max Lowe yet? Just seen Claude Makelele's stats. 4 goals in total for Madrid, Chelsea and PSG. Yet there will be some people who think he was a good player. Idiots.
Ah but how often did Makele use his finger to indicate the direction in which he wanted something or someone to go?
