I've always been a critic of Norwood and never particularly his biggest fan mainly due to his consistent inconsistency, where one game he's in command, the next totally invisible.
For me this comes down to Norwood's role and our formation. He's not an out and out defensive midfielder, he's not an out and out attacking midfielder and he's not a box to box midfielder. His role is pretty much central. When we commit numbers forward and he has runners ahead of him he thrives as he has options for an outlet. When we're under pressure and dropping back deeper into our half, he becomes ineffective as he doesn't track back well, and when he gets the ball he has no options ahead of him to pass to causing him to either give it away or dissappear in games, largely because players panic under pressure and bypass him by hoofing it out of play or up the field.
For me Norwood can thrive alongside Hamer, as he's a box to box midfielder who will track back and do the dirty work, and get forward giving him an option and outlet. For me Norwood can thrive in a four man midfield with him and Hamer in the middle. Think McCall/Brown with Norwood as Macca and Hamer as the Lord.
