Coutts for me, more consistent.

Norwood's contribution has been excellent but he has had more poor games then Coutts had. Some of Norwood's long range passing has been out of this world and he trumps Coutts in that regard, but in terms of steady 8/10 performances week in week out, Coutts was consistency personified before his injury.

Coutts for me. Norwood is certainly quality but is probe to having a few bad games, while coutts was quality every single game.
It’s such a shame that injury seems to have ruined his career

Coutts during that period edges it, but he's been here for 4 years now and we've only had a year and a bit of good performances for him. That coupled with the fact he's currently not cutting it and he's 3 years older, means that if I had to choose between the two it would be Norwood all day long. Fortunately we don't have to choose between the two and are lucky to have both.

Coutts.

Stronger. More consistent. Better pass completion. Dispossessed less. More responsible. Drives with the ball. Better for Fleck.

If he's showing signs he can get back near that level, there's no way we should deprive him of opportunities and risk losing him.

Even making allowances for recency bias, Norwood is a bigger goal threat, creates more chances, and looks to be at least as good as Coutts was at passing the ball. Norwood's also good defensively (leads the team in both tackles and interceptions this season) and has ability with set-pieces.

We talk about his consistency a fair bit, but he's asked to do more things than Coutts was in terms of trying more difficult passes / take freekicks and corners etc. Sheer volume means that some of them aren't going to come off.

If the question was "who was / is most important to us" then I'd side with Coutts, especially knowing what happened when he got injured. As it's "who's better" though...

Owwwwww it's 11 votes a piece

Completely. Think I said the other day on a different thread that we rarely saw under Wilder Coutts put in anything less than a 7/10, and he is certainly the more consistent from what we’ve seen of the two. He is probably performance-enhancing for the rest of the team when at his best. But Norwood on the other hand is technically able to do more to help win us a game – his stats back that up too. Remove him from the lineup and there are plenty of goals that wouldn’t have happened. He will balls-up things more because he takes risks that Coutts wouldn’t. That’s also key to us winning games though.

I said to a pig mate at the beginning of last season, Coutts was the best CM in the division.

He lol’d and said “who” !!

Turns out I was wrong as it was Cairney. But Coutts was a close 2nd for me, right up to that feckin injury.

UTB

Difficult to pick, Coutts more consistent but Norwood better at the long pass and taking set pieces.

Either would be fine, so stick with what we have, so Norwood for me but not voted because if Coutts could return to his best form they are too similar regards the influence on our team. it’s like asking who’s best Messi or Ronaldo?

They're not really comparable. They play the same position, but their roles are quite different.

Coutts job was to be available for the pass from defense, keep possession, look for Fleck & provide a screen for the back 3. He was the beating heart of our midfield for a long time and was exceptionally good at it.

The way United now play is slightly different to when Coutts was in the side.

Norwood provides the screen for the back 3 and makes himself available for the pass out of defense, but also looks to spread the play to the opposite side of the pitch & get himself into crossing positions. We move the ball forwards much quicker now, and alot of this come from Norwood.

What I do know, is that they're both exceptional footballers and were lucky to have them in the squad.

Neither, ones Irish and the others Scottish. Both are brilliant, waste of time.

Poll for me! always thought he was better than both coutts and norwood.

As a measure of how well we’re performing with Norwood in the team - We might go second in the table tomorrow.

Are you really suggesting that you’d switch one of the most influential positions on the pitch “if he’s showing signs that he can get back to previous levels”?

I’m astounded anyone would think that.
