No Penalty in 18 Months

Yesterday, Speed was bemoaning the fact that we have not had a penalty awarded for us for 18 months.

I would just like to point out that you actually have to attack the box to get a Pen these days - that's the opposition penalty area not your own!

If you play negative football you won't get in the box to get a chance of a penalty.
If you're 2-0 down and the other team is playing out time and all you can do is moan about a debatable penalty without realising that the ratio of chances was about 3:1 or 4:1 for the previous 87 minutes its a very blinkered view. You have to affect the game well before then. It's lame excuses that's all.

It did look like one of our few chances to score and it was a pen, then again we didn't deserve it they looked awful.
It wouldn't have made any difference would any of the players even remember how to take a penalty!
The players haven't learned how to surround the ref to complain as other teams do as we rarely have anyone attacking in the box to be brought down.
The penalty incident in a close game would have been disasterous but yesterday just took away from a very poor performance.
Did they save that effort for the tv cameras I hope potential foreign investors didn't watch it!

No, we've had at least one this calendar year. Henderson got one at West Brom in January.

The last 1 at home is over a year ago tho, against West Brom of all teams, in fact we scored 3 goals against WBA last season, all Penalty's

We were not awarded one at all in 1991-2, and I think we only got 2 the season before, one of which we missed.

thank neil for that.. all of that moaning and ref baiting and 'look i'm on tv' ego tripping was ultimately counter productive.. hoofer teams never get pens.. i have a theory it is because the underlying psychology is that they are somehow 'cheating' (by not playing the game in the spirit intended as much as anything)..

There's definitely some correlation between the type of player we have and the amount of penalties we are given. We lack players with pace in the final third and is probably a good reason why we never get brought down for them

A bit simplistic but had we got trickier, pacier players I reckon our chances of winning a penalty would increase no end.
