No Lane return for Matt and Billy
This is not good news:

Sheffield United are beginning to plan for life without loan aces Matt Phillips and Billy Clarke.

The Blackpool duo have been in sparkling form since signing on a 28-day deal 24 hours before the derby match last month.

Winger Phillips has already scored five goals in just four starts, while striker Clarke, who plays as a deep-lying forward behind the main front man, has notched just once but laid on a host of assists.

Saturday’s match at Stevenage will be the last league game they are involved in, although both are expected to play a part in next Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern quarter-final tie at Bradford City. Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has already poured cold water on any suggestion of extending the loan spell.

He said: “I sent them out on loan to get them up-to-speed and get them sharp and confident.

“That is what has happened and I am delighted they have done so well. They will be ready to hit the ground running when they return.

“I’m looking forward to when Billy and Matt come back because they’ll be absolutely buzzing so that’ll give me a couple more options.”

It leaves Blades’ boss Danny Wilson searching the loan market to replace the guile and scoring threat that the pair possess.

The Oxford United FA Cup match on November 12 at Bramall Lane is the first game after Clarke and Phillips return to the Seasiders.

It’s likely Wilson will have to go with his remaining squad as clubs from a higher league will not want to ‘cup-tie’ their players.

The Star understands that replacing the pair is a higher priority than bringing in another goalkeeper before the loan window closes on November 24.

Never thought they would be allowed to stay. Holloway stated at the outset it was to get them match sharp and with them doing so well he was never going to loan them out for longer. Ched will come in for Clarke but Phillips is the big miss because he is far better than NML knows where the net is for a winger and we haven't got that type of player to replace him.

Don't you think that the USA would have a much lower problem with obesity if fewer of them "stepped up to the plate"

"at Bradford"! More quality journalism. Its at home.

Frees up 2 loan places then lets hope we have replacements lined up. We knew they wouldn't be staying

Did someone mention Seth? Hey Seth, we will not be reliant on loan players, we have made that mistake and won't be doing it again.

What else do we do at the moment? other than play what weve got.

Would you like to sign a keeper ON LOAN? or wait till January

But Stanny - Micadilly has his furrow to plough about McCabe. It's a long furrow and doesn't deviate more than an inch or so either way.
Be good to know if Micadillydido had £50m cash to spunk away would he have propped up the Blades in the same way? I think we all know they answer to this one.

Like DW has stated in the press the loan system can be useful if used properly - there are good loans (e.g. Clarke and Phillips) and bad loans (Nosser, Mattock, Bent etc).
McCabe didn't choose the loans the manager's have made - just backed the manager and sanctioned them - but that doesn't dissuade the Micafeller from refraining in his constant and dreary bashing of McCabe at every opportunity. Makes you wonder if there is any personal vendetta between the two.

Le ds were lucky the loan two did'nt play last night or Blackpool would of got ten, it's nice to see another team (especially them) having trouble between the posts though.
But where will our goals come from when those two go back?

While Halloway has used these loans to get the players match fit and confident, we should remember that by the same logic the players (of our own) that could have played instead of Clarke and Phillips will be a little less match fit and confident for the games following the end of the loans.

I don't think McCabe ever made a decision to put 50m into United to 'prop us up'

He may have made some off-field decisions in his pursuit of business gain and for a better United that proved disastrous through bad luck or bad judgement or a combination.

And don't forget as a result of this the club is paying him back lots of money every year through the Tevez money and he has a hotel.

I actually think he was slightly more bad luck than bad judgement and have a fair bit of sympathy for him (except on his season ticket policy of course) .

But let's not pretend that he decided to throw 50m at United. It wasn't quite as voluntary as that. Circumstances, many beyond his control, have led to the loans.

Can't knock him too much this season to be fair. There's been fewer bad off-field decisions than normal. Though I fear January.

It must be a quiet day. These quotes are about a week old.

Hey, when are the accounts out Mic?

Tuns - I never made any of those assumptions you have just posted.

All I was doing was highlighting that it is easy to throw a constant stream of insults at a bloke when you are behind a keyboard but it is less simple to have the financial clout to manage an enterprise the size of SUFC - whether by choice or circumstance. There is no doubt that McCabe has propped up SUFC - he may not have made any conscious decision to do this but he has done so nevertheless. I don't think McCabe has made the right decisions on managers post the Warnock era - and I dare say he might agree with me on that one. I don't doubt for one minute though, that he has had the best interests of SUFC in mind (albeit sizing this up with what he can afford and what he can deliver). If there is another option available then show us. McCabe has sought other investment during his tenure but has not sold us down the river to some dodgy, overseas, would-be owner. I believe he takes his responsibilities very seriously and as for paying him back - are you absolutely sure that McCabe will get everything back plus interest? I'd be very surpised if he comes out of this anything like remotely even.

A shame, but expected. Back to reality. Try and hold it all together until January and see if anything comes out of that...

Loan players are good the team wants them back, are they crap we get relegated.Maybe we could buy a first team of regular players.

Mendez Laing is back next week almost recovered, Porters back fit
Lets not forget we got to 2nd early season without these 2
, been nice having them , but the show must go on
West End musicals go on when star performers are off, we just have to get the under studies up to the mark

At least DW has shown that ours is a great club to get loan players match fit and fully up to speed - if he needs to convince any managers.

That's a pretty good point, especially with regards to younger players. Other managers will know their youngsters will play decent football when they come here.

I think United are trying to get the loans extended. Hope so! We will have to wait and see.
