  • 10 to 15 years ago Gillingham was known as the premier town in the medway area now its bottom of the pile. the people have got ugly in nature and in looks. Drugs are rife so is crime.

Unfortunately an accurate description of many places in Britain nowadays, Bladebri.

Your report means I definitely won't be going to Gillingham any time soon. I'll be going upmarket and staying across the water at Jaywick Sands. (Isn't that where Redknapp lives? :D)

If you're serious about staying local, then Rochester has options. A handful of decent beer pubs, a plethora of lager chav places and a nightclub that has a reputation for fights, loose women and zealous bouncers (think West Street followed by Barry Nobles Roxy in the mid Eighties).

If you're more discerning, then Whitstable is a cracker for atmosphere and pubs. You will find live music somewhere, it has two micropubs and you may get lucky with posh crumpet hen weekends staying in the old huts on the beach. No night clubs but two good curry houses. Canterbury is only 6 miles away and it has a couple of night clubs, though Summer months sees them quieter without the students being around. In August you may prefer to join the pretty young things with a barbecue and crates of beer on the beach.

As an alternative, Ramsgate has some great pubs that are a little down heel but with cracking variety of beer and atmosphere. The harbour has adjacent bars where local farming and foreign yachting types try to form mating relationships. Gets lively but friendly down there.

Me? I'd book one of Galvers micropub bus crawls. For thirty quid each he takes you to seven different micro pubs in East Kent. The cost covers the travel and a pint in each pub, how he does it no one knows, but you will see different parts of Kent, meet people and can end up in some nightclub in margate or ramsgate after. Its a unique way to do something different,

If you have other preferences let me know and I will make a suggestion.

Finally, you would regret staying in Gillingham, bad things really do happen to strangers there. A daylight only town for normal folk..

One of the best holidays Family HB had was in Kent. Didn't venture near Gillingham though, which may have been a factor. Rochester, Canterbury, Dover (its castle), fantastic.

  • 10 to 15 years ago Gillingham was known as the premier town in the medway area nnow its bottom of the pile. the peole have got ugly in nature and in in looks. Drugs are rife so is crime. Some one said before about as soon as the sun comes out the blokes all whip their shirts off and drive around like maniacs and they are quite right. The Gillingham look is now one of "What you effin Looking at" etc. etc. half the women have more tattos than a seasoned sailor and seem to be in a contest about who can show off the most amount of ugly tatoo'd flesh.
  • Fat Women who pester you for sex and beer
  • The actual town itself.
  • Thinking of living in Gillingham? Avoid the following like the plague!!! Parr Avenue, Hazlemere Drive, The Vineries, James Street Flats.
  • Shit local band Puny Fish.
  • Lack of Street Cleaning and ROAD REPAIRS(Worst In the Country?)
  • Howard School -lags behind the times.Fantasises about it's glory days as Gillingham Grammer. Fails to nuture the individual. Atrocious self-congratulatory attitude.
  • Arseholes and Heroin Dealers.
  • Gillingham high street any week day !
  • Moving there in the first place
  • Not enough places to skate without getting injured by drunk louts.
  • Avoid Gillingham High Street if you possibly can. If you must visit it (for the bank or something)put your wallet in an inaccessible place, and your head down and walk fast. Or you could disguise yourself as a native by wearing labelled sports gear, lots of gold jewellery, greasy hair, tatoos and a couple of lovebites.
  • The Zone Public transport Dogshit Twats who drive faster round corners than on the straight. Blokes who drive around topless as soon as there is a ray of sunlight.
  • The groups of kids who hang around on street corners pretending to be hard, at least untill mum says it's bed time.
  • The roads in it, the worst road surfaces in the country. Overcrowding in North Ward, Most crowded area in Kent, Yet still they Build! The Strand Kids pleasure area next to Gas works,Chemical plant, Petrol station with a view of Power stations Oil refineries, and very often a smell from Motney hill sewerage plant PUBLIC TRANSPORT Near non existent Street cleaning Video cameras every where, We`re not all villains!
  • The kappa tracksuit-wearing little upstarts who stand outside the train station and spit a lot.
  • Don't even think of visiting if you don't live here, or are visiting someone who does!
  • Loads of geezer birds especially in the Casino!
  • most locals avoid gillingham high st due to the neanderthol apearence of the underclass that use it
  • None of the clubs play any REALLY good music :(
  • Twydall is a dump, and its kebab shop closes really early.
  • Rainham Mark chip shop dosn't sell kebabs.
  • No kebab shops near the Avenue.
  • Poor traffic planning.
Yeah but the butchers near Rainham station is great! You bloody pessimist.

As others have said, if you're making a weekend of it, Whitstable is nice and will make a change from the usual stay in London, pretend you're enjoying yourself haunts.

Whitstable is great , but it's not really a big night out pub crawl sort of place.

I've been giving this some thought...if you wanted to be very close to gillingham and still have decent nightlife then Maidstone is pretty good. I'm too old for clubs now but I know my nieces and nephews come from Bexleyheath to go to Maidstone for the nightlife when it would be easier to go into London.

If you mean Harry I think you'll find that he lives at Sandbanks in Dorset

Wasn't it Gillingham that a German-based Blade had the word "Kraut" scratched on his (German-plated) car while parked up for the game?

I remember some steroided up idiot getting narky (but not fighty) on the way back to the station after the match one time and the most godforsaken street market I've seen in the first world - crap covers for mobile-'phones a speciality, speaking of which isn't Whitstable famous for its oysters? - I think I had some there.....

Personally I'm off to see Parliament-Funkadelic at the Electric Ballroom in Camden on the Friday night. That'll take some beating.

You'll no doubt all be pleased to know that this was absolutely fantastic and the stopped the whole weekend being an utter shambles.
