Nigel Clough - "I Didn't Fail"

Yes take out the cup games and it was one big yawn at the Lane
I only went to three away last season Notts, Bristol and Barnsley played well in all three.
Why Clough didnt employ those tactics every game mystified me,home and away.
This is something that always puzzles me. Why would you take out the best games from the equation? There is an alternative argument that if you took out the shit games, we were amazing.

Neither gives the correct overview

He wasted a catastrophic amount of money on John Brayford.
The signing of Keiron Freeman would of been sufficient and actually proved to be, we could've easily got promoted had we of used that money wisely.

Didn't Brayford play most of his games at right back before then moving to centre half when we had a crisis there?

Why was it a catastrophic waste of money? Was Brayford shite under Clough?

Because we spent around 2m on him, reports of being more. Adding to the 10k a week thats another 520k a year over 3 years thats 1.56m.
Freeman was better than Brayford that year.

Brayford is poor defensively and cost us 2 goals at Wembley, not that you'll of noticed it was probably Doyle's fault or something.

The concurrent poll on another Clough thread shows only 53% will not applaud him on his return to the ground next Tuesday and 47% will 'applaud him warmly'.

By anybody's standard that is a good welcome for an ex-manager and even though I'll be gut wrenched if it happens, for the sake of Adkins and our club, such opinions and actions have to be respected.

There was a poll on here after he was sacked and after Adkins was appointed to almost unanimous approval; a full 40% still said Clough should have been given more time to continue the job.

Personally I was glad to see the back of him and his assistant Garner, his poor signings and his style of football. He wasted a wedge of our money but the statistics in the above polls are undeniable. He had a following in S2 despite his failings.

If you had taken a poll of fans that wanted him to sign Brayford there would have been not many that didn't want him too. If memory serves there was a real Buzz around the place when it looked like Brayford was going to sign.
Now Brayfords average it was a massive. Waste of money and Clough is a little Tosser for signing him ffs.....
Get real Pillocks!!!. Brayford looked a class above when he was on loan here. Freeman was no where near as good as Brayford on Loan and most thought Freeman was the dodgy purchase. Read the posts back......

I'd say anyone who was happy we spent £2m on him has pretty poor judgement.

Look back at the time, everyone wanted him signed. Even Phipps came out with, we haven't got just any right back, we've signed John Brayford.
Shame he is a shadow of what was here on loan, do you think they would have expected him to turn wank that quickly after signing, I think not.
If he played like he is playing now they would have sent him back to Cardiff quick as fuck.

At the time I assumed we could afford him because of the Saudi investment. I didn't realise that a few months later we'd be crying about how much we've lost and signing no one in the JTW.
I assumed there was some kind of plan to it, not just the hope that the new signings would carry us to a promotion spot and without any consideration for what would happen if they didn't.

I think that's a good summary of what most thought and what the rest hoped for. But this is Sheffield United so obviously it was never going to turn out like that. I suspected it would impact our summer budget significantly but in any case I wasn't happy we were spending that amount on him. I thought he was worth about £1m.... now I think he's worth about 300k.

I think it's something at the club, it can't be anything else. Every player we seem to sign looks a great buy. They then put on a Blades shirt and overnight seem to turn shit, regardless of manager. Hammond great at Leicester, blades he's shit, Coutts great at Derby, Preston and wins football skills corner challenge for accuracy comes to The Blades, shit but improving. Baxter at Oldham, Everton great, Blades Shit. Done at Rochdale, great comes to us, not going to say shit, but not as good........... The list goes on.

It's because they are either past it , unfit , injured or not as good as they or the manager thinks they are . It's changing the culture which will then change the players we purchase with quality and mentality . The simple things are sometimes the hardest to get right . The list has gone on , it's up to Adkins to break the circle .

and with an actual reply.

Are these "good players" he got away with the same that are now the "worst squad ever" per chance?

Clough should have been given another season. Adkins will deserve another full season after this (even if he signs Hammond). Less than 2 full seasons is fucking stupid.

So 95% mind numbing games is ok?
Mmm

So signing a National League standard player is acceptable ?

Just look a little under the headlines at the career of each of those three players you mention.

Hammond hardly had a game for Leicester the previous 2 years. Sometimes came on as sub to see the game out last 20 minutes, got booked, generally slowed things down.

Coutts injured most of previous 2 years. Had only odd games before joining us. Joined us a long time after he was "great at Derby".

Baxter - Drugs arrest at Everton as a teenager, fell out with Everton. Did OK at Oldham but split their fans. Big time Charlie in a poor side, took all set pieces like a Big Time Charlie does.

Done - winger most of his career, poor at Barnsley for example. Also ran at Rochdale until he was played up front where he was excellent for about a third of a season. We signed him on the strength of that. In actual fact now he's found his level he doesn't really know how to play as lone striker or as one of two strikers; he like plays his own game and his fellow players play hell with him.

The thing that's wrong at the club is the managers and their scouts. Player signings value for money 3/10 for years.

Maths not your strong suit then Enders?

You've discounted the Cup Games and the only 3 away games you saw so your way under 95% already. What about the unbeaten run from relegation fodder to play off contenders in Feb/Mar 2014? Mind numbing?
Talking about 2014-2015
By the way maths ain't my strong point :)

I'm old enough to know better really.

We was living off the euphoria of 2013-2014 it ain't happened.
He wasn't worth 2m but he can still do us a great service when he returns to form

He spent over 3m in transfer fees alone, signed over 20 players and we still conceded 5 in the play-offs at Swindon Town.

If he's not worth the 2m, or the 10k+ a week how is he providing a good service for us?
