I think we want the loan to convert seamlessly into a permanent transfer. We don't want him going back, even for a few days. You know what would happen...

My forecast is that the last few games will be insignificant in the grand scheme of things. We will soon have the guy who Nigel thinks will captain our promotion winning team. There'll be a centre-back along as well, though that's going to take a bit longer.

Of course the Jim White DDDs would have liked Nigel to bring in second-choices instead and have no room for the players he actually wants. Personally, I take the rather controversial view that our manager should decide our priorities, not us. Ridiculous I know, but that's the way I am...

Leicester Mercury: Monday 28th September

LOAN BLOW FOR DEANO

Dean Hammond's hopes of a loan move away from the Walkers Crisp Bowl have been dealt an unexpected set-back, following Saturday's eventful win over Arsenal.

The Foxes' impressive run under new boss Claudio Ranieri continues to defy pundits' pre-season predictions, but the 4-3 win over the Gunners came at some cost. Goalscorer Danny Drinkwater is set to miss the next two months with the innocuous groin injury he picked up celebrating his opener in the first half, while N'Golo Kante's injury-time lunge on serial-bad-challenge-receiver Aaron Ramsey was met with a clear red card that has absolutely no chance of being overturned.

The loss of the midfield duo has led boss Ranieri into a u-turn on the future of Hammond, who now looks set for a recall to the squad. Only last week Ranieri had stated his intention to get the frozen-out Hammond some regular football, but following Saturday's game this now looks set to happen with the Foxes.

The news comes as a blow to Hammond, who had been hoping to link up with former boss Nigel Adkins at Sheffield United. However, in staying with City, he may now enjoy the unexpected bonus of a clean sheet and resultant Pizza Supper courtesy of Ranieri.

I simply can't understand why you have nothing better to do on a Friday night than fantasise about Dean Hammond and Claudio Ranieri.

What?....

Oh, yeah....

mmm......

Sorry.

It really has been a very productive Friday...

Hammond might sign Monday. But as with the Burn deal, something completely unforeseen might happen before that to completely change the circumstances. Had he signed today, yes he'd miss the Xmas games, but the deal would have been protected against any last-minute hiccups. And, more to the point, he'd have been available tomorrow. Fingers crossed this particular dice-roll pays off.

The Sheffield United guide to the transfer window
May
End another season having not met our targets. Get the current manager, one player and Jim Phipps to go on record about how disappointed they are to have not met their targets and say how we will regroup, strengthen the side with some extra quality and go for automatic promotion next season.

June
Rumours begin to surface that one of our better performing players from last season is wanted by a team in the league above and a figure of between £1 - £2.5 million is quoted as being the priced needed to get him. The club deny they've had any contact 'for any of it's players.'

July
The retained list is announced and a couple of under performing journeymen are released. Somehow at least 1 under performing player remains under contract despite the reported length of contract being up.

Replace released players with a couple of free transfers of questionable quality. Jim continues to reassure fans on Twitter that everybody at the club is working very hard to bring in the right players to get the team ready for the promotion push.

August
First game of the season comes round and the player linked with the move to the team above starts the season in the side. Said player may be available for up to 3 games but will then be sold before the month is out. Jim will take to Twitter to reassure fans that the club 'did all they could' to keep the player but the player 'expressed a desire to leave' and that was that. Jim will say that the fee received will be 'reinvested into the develeopment and the functioning of the first team side' but that these things take time.

Transfer deadline day
We are told throughout August how difficult it is to get deals done, how it is a '3 party process' and that it can go right to the wire but all at the club are confident of bringing in the required players.

We are linked with good quality players up to deadline day. Time passes and things look increasingly less likely until the window 'slams shut' and we haven't replaced that player we sold. Some fans are quick to remind others that the loan window opens in a week so we will be able to bring players in then on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in January.

September
We are linked with players but nothing happens for the first 3 or 4 weeks. The manager is asked by Andy Giddings at each pre match press conference how close we are to making signings and the answer is always 'we are working on 1 or 2.'
As things roll on and nothing happens we are then reminded by some fans that there is no point in bringing the players in at the start of September because of the 93 day rule which would leave us short for 'the busy festive period.' All the while we have inconsistent form in the league and drop points at home and away.

October/November
Still no players signed, the league form improves slightly and we are told by the manager and Jim that we are happy so long as we are in the top 6 and close to the automatic promotion places and then we can add the bits of quality we need in January to see us over the line.

January
Nothing happens for the first 3 weeks. We are linked with some players who are doing well in the same division as us and are told that work is going on behind the scenes and that money is available.

Things heat up in the last week, as form suffers again the club decide it is time to act and money is spent on improving the squad. The players which come in are sometimes questionable but we can't deny that the board are backing the manager (although 4 months late.)

February-May
We continue to have inconsistent form in the league and our league position changes regularly until it becomes apparent that the top 2 has got away from us in April and we then end up finishing in 5th or 6th place. We will then go out of the play offs in the semi finals. If we manage to finish 3rd or 4th we will make the play off final, but the team will freeze on the big stage and lose.

Repeat.

This should be chapter 1, Page 1 of 1 of 'The Blades Way' how to run Sheffield United Football Club.

Adkins knows what he is doing . The best players are the quickest thinkers . The best managers use there heads for short and long term solutions. The players will be arriving .

"We tried..."

"But both Hammond and Burns wanted a wage so we had to pull the plug, therefore because of Nigel Adkins failure to send us top after 9 games and over 50k to spend on players we have decided to part company paying him £3m in compensation money we could have spent on players but decided against it"

I'll just re-write the September onwards section:

W/C Sep 28th - two significant loand deals for 93 days with an agreed deal on 1st January.

By Xmas we are top with a cushion of 4 points.

In January we sign up the twp loanees who have been our third brst players after Done and Brayford. Coutts and Kennedy are also key players.

Reed has been MOM 3 times and is flourishing.

By March we are as good as Champions and in summer Adkins releases 6 squad players whose contracts expire, retaining only a couple.

I collect my season long bet on United for promotion.

If you are correct I shall be soooooo happy and will praise you as the next "messiah" !! :D

You cannot coach crap players into being world beaters, nor even average players into being really good players. Work rate can be increased but skill and quality is in the dna .......

You realise you are preaching to lost souls who ❤️ Hoof; idolise Dinosaur Dave, 'Ol Big Nose and Muckanettles; like to be Upanatem and think Nick Montgomery was one of our greatest players of the Century?...

would have thought the club was focusing on the burton game mon tuesday as new players would probably be ineligible so signings will happen weds

41.3 Subject to Regulations 41.4 and 41.5, a Player will only be eligible to play in a match organised by The League if the appropriate forms for his Standard Loan, Emergency Loan, Youth Loan or Emergency Loan of a goalkeeper transfer are received (including by facsimile) and found to be in order by the Executive:

41.3.1 in respect of any fixture played on a weekday when the Office is normally open, at least three hours before the match; or

41.3.2 in respect of any other fixture:
  • (a) 12 noon on the day of the match; or

If I've read that correctly, he could play so long as he's registered by 4:45pm tomorrow. If it's been lined up as people think for so long, I'd have thought Adkins might have it announced at 4:44pm...

depends on the small print on the 93 day rule

And, of course, depends on whether NA has been given the green light to spend some money ........ :tumbleweed:

Or if we will try to "see how we're going in January" as we so often do when we f**k up the opportunity of getting out of this agricultural division ......

Unless he's been secretly training with us it would be a bit mental just to chuck him in.

well not really spending any money its loans, a free trial
and Adkins has made it clear hes been given the money , I dont see why these comments persist

Loans cost, and depending on the wage of the player they can be extremely expensive.

So would Frank Lampard. Haven't seen such a bang average but obviously well coached kid turn into a goal machine since Keegan.

Add Gary and Phil Neville to that list. However, these are players that have had excellent work ethics and coaching from a young age. When a player is in their 30s, (Collins, McEveley, Higdon, JCR etc) it is unlikely a new manager will get significant improvement out of them. Sometimes giving offensive players freedom and confidence can still help their game but they're unlikely to be completely transformed.

but we have repeatedly said in public there are players coming in
its just about the timing , so if they impress we dont have to send them back
and getting the players we want of course
not someone to appease a few fans

You haven't read it correctly. It states "whichever is the earlier", which would be 12 noon, rather than 16:45. The 3 hours earlier thing is to stop a club who is playing at 12:30 signing a player just half an hour before the match, at 12 noon.

Yes, but doesn't that only apply to games not on a weekday?

"in respect of any fixture played on a weekday when the Office is normally open, at least three hours before the match; or..."

41.3.2 then goes on to the "any other fixture", for which the "whatever is earlier" applies. It's a separate clause - "whatever is earlier" only applies to the two situations mentioned in 41.3.2.

You're completely right, it's me that read it wrong then.

Burn and Hammond double signing imminent then...
