New stadium at the Lane?

The easiest answer to all of this is lets go down and stay in the championship winning promotion every 2/3 years that way we'll enjoy top of the championship football and earning a few Bob in the Premier league without the need to rebuild, possibly the pink seats could be replaced, over time of course we don't waste our money

We dont need a 50K + stadium.

We havent sold out the first two home games of the season when a) we've won two promotions in two years b) the football we play is some of, if not, the best people have seen c) we have blades as managers and captains d) its out first season in the top flight in 12 years

We dont have the fan base for 50k +. When sadly Wilder leaves and someone else comes in, will the enthusiam still be there to maintain our current levels? Will it be there if we remained in PL but bottom half each year? Our crowds went down in the promotion season for christs sake!! Add in the all the other factors (less young people than before, digitalisation with games available to stream etc etc, crowds in some cases falling with saturisation of the paying market), all the indicators say dont waste major money on a new ground /major ground investment. A new Kop maybe if we stay up a few years and the affordability is right, but we sound like Pigs saying lets get a 50k stadium!

The chances of us challenging at the top of the PL are ridiculously slim! We'll have all on staying in this year!

Fair enough and you're 100% right. Incremental increase is the way and those steps should absolutely be based on a response to real market factors. Not a Field of Dreams 'if you build it, they will come' mentality.

However, my 50K position is IF that's where we end up, organically and out of necessity, then turning the ground through 90 degrees is the only realistic option. I don't think it should be rushed into and l certainly wouldn't want it to happen if it meant the club became financially vulnerable or, more importantly, lost some of its soul in the process - via a modern bowl or the like.

I thought of a couple of things here gleadlessblades (not criticizing you, or arguing) but I think are important. (I'll number them to make easier to counter)

1. Yes, I agree we don't need a 50k,
2. However, you can see on the pictures that clearly we're rammed into the corner of an enormous plot of land (see post #462)
3. Poor 'future' planning over the years has led to this
4. We shouldn't continue it - think ahead for once
5. If we go down in a year or 2 or 3 or whatever, no one will want to spend money on improving the stadium.
6. I heard Weds (fans and club) saying 'if we go up, we'll develop Leppings' - which again is stupid. They'd be in the position we are in, having to lower capacity to improve/expand (should we stay up for a few years). He's supposed to have money, why doesn't he redevelop while they have thousands of empty seats - (empty promises probably)
7. The Kop is crap. And this should be number one on the agenda, and this could be done with either a cheap or expensive option. <List of possibilities here>

8. regarding 1. Though I agree we don't need 50k, I would argue that we have double that fan base, and potential to get more in future. If we go down and empty seats, fill them with cheap children tickets (which is what we've done - but there's scope to go further)
9. regarding 8. Recent years / China and its growing population. 20k last year and more this year. HUGE football fan base, and could help put us on the map.
10. regarding fanbase. People like me, (was die-hard in 80s-90s) but in last few years just go to 5 or 6 if someone gets me a ticket. (this year will be zero, even though I'm not a glory hunter. FFS remember the dark times?! I went week in week out.) - you mentioned wasn't seel out first 2 games, I would have gone to either if I could find easy way to
11. The ground held 49k when I was young and we got ave. of about 12k. So I don't agree with comments about demand. The demand has never been higher.

12. nice round number: with better facilities on the Kop, will bring more money in, and most importantly good views all around. It's now the only place left that is shit. It was a quick job, and now needs attention. The SS I would hold back on. Developing the kop with good facilites and 15k good seats rather than 10k crap ones now, would increase capacity to +5k (or maybe more depending on design.

13. unlucky last - make it easier to get tickets. I'm only 45 but in the mindset of 'go to ground' > pay to get in > watch a match.
These days, emails passwords, members,
my dad hasn't gone for about 30 years. Reason? Nah, I'll leave it to the young ens. I wouldn't know how to get a ticket etc etc. All potential extra fans when you extend that across the city.

If we build that junkyard extention on the kop now as an easy fix, it will become a corpse in the stadium if we go down.

Looks great
Can I have one dad
eugh, the Kop is hideous, and a business building in the corner is criminal. No thanks! :)

We never averaged 12000 when the ground held 49000, post WW2 anyway.

Find it impossible to believe that an architect just comes up with one design, it’s not their choice/ decision regards how the stadium is improved.
There are loads of options and alternatives with different advantages/ disadvantages. The owner will have made the choice regards the best value approach.

If I owned the club then I’d want a general idea about the costings and return on investment on all the options.
0nce you choose the best option, then the architect go into a more detailed planning stage design. This is what I suspect will have happened.

Even if they did look at other options, the extensions were announced 12 years ago. Surely it warrants a fresh look? A lot has changed in that time, not least the value of the TV deal and the income of a Premier League club.

We’ve currently (in my opinion) got the greatest manager in the clubs history with huge potential. We should be thinking big, not cheap and cheerful for a change. If anyone can make a new stadium viable, it’s Chris Wilder!

Not sure if anyone has suggested this, thus far!! Instead of SS extra tier and the terrible Kop extension; demolish John St and Kop, move the pitch towards SS and you’d get more room for the John St side. Potentially a two tier stand similar to the one at Oakwell with the boxes along the middle. The improved rake of the Kop would therefore match either SS, new John St or both?

If we're still flogging this dead horse I'd suggest that if we do become an established Premier League club (think Everton, not Liverpool), I expect the attendances to actually go down rather than up once the excitement has faded. It's a pretty boring league.

While I agree with you in principle, I cannot support your conclusion. At lot has indeed changed and the football watching demographic has also changed, along with increased prices and technology.
The availability of all sport has become greater and more commonplace. There is still a place for live matches and the great atmosphere that a buzzing home crowd can produce, but attendance at live games will fall off. Given the alternatives available and an aging population, this is inevitable.
My conclusion would be to have plans in the bag to do a full and proper refurb of the Kop if we survive this season.
Sorry to be a spoilsport because I would love us to have a world class stadium on the current site, but I would hate it to be at the cost of our future, like the south stand almost did for us.

Do dem current plans belong to McCabe,if yes what sort of plans will The Prince be sending in to Sheffield City Council.
I'm sure the Prince won't used the shit architects that McCabe used for the John St stand and cheese wedge corner just because those stands were done on the cheap.

Doubt the Prince will have any intention of upgrading the Lane.

What's more likely to happen is prices will go up when the demand is great and down when it's low, why should they go to all the expense of building when that's all they have to do to increase revenue... …..

We don’t need a 50k stadium, but we do need a better stadium. A 36/40k would allow more away fans into the ground without compromising our own fans and allow for a future increase our fan base.
