I thought of a couple of things here
gleadlessblades (not criticizing you, or arguing) but I think are important. (I'll number them to make easier to counter)
1. Yes, I agree we don't need a 50k,
2. However, you can see on the pictures that clearly we're rammed into the corner of an enormous plot of land (see post #462)
3. Poor 'future' planning over the years has led to this
4. We shouldn't continue it - think ahead for once
5. If we go down in a year or 2 or 3 or whatever, no one will want to spend money on improving the stadium.
6. I heard Weds (fans and club) saying 'if we go up, we'll develop Leppings' - which again is stupid. They'd be in the position we are in, having to lower capacity to improve/expand (should we stay up for a few years). He's supposed to have money, why doesn't he redevelop while they have thousands of empty seats - (empty promises probably)
7. The Kop is crap. And this should be number one on the agenda, and this could be done with either a cheap or expensive option.
<List of possibilities here>
8. regarding 1. Though I agree we don't need 50k, I would argue that we have double that fan base, and potential to get more in future. If we go down and empty seats, fill them with cheap children tickets (which is what we've done - but there's scope to go further)
9. regarding 8. Recent years / China and its growing population. 20k last year and more this year. HUGE football fan base, and could help put us on the map.
10. regarding fanbase. People like me, (was die-hard in 80s-90s) but in last few years just go to 5 or 6 if someone gets me a ticket. (this year will be zero, even though I'm not a glory hunter. FFS remember the dark times?! I went week in week out.) - you mentioned wasn't seel out first 2 games, I would have gone to either if I could find easy way to
11. The ground held 49k when I was young and we got ave. of about 12k. So I don't agree with comments about demand. The demand has never been higher.
12. nice round number: with better facilities on the Kop, will bring more money in, and most importantly good views all around. It's now the only place left that is shit. It was a quick job, and now needs attention. The SS I would hold back on. Developing the kop with good facilites and 15k good seats rather than 10k crap ones now, would increase capacity to +5k (or maybe more depending on design.
13. unlucky last - make it easier to get tickets. I'm only 45 but in the mindset of 'go to ground' > pay to get in > watch a match.
These days, emails passwords, members,
my dad hasn't gone for about 30 years. Reason? Nah, I'll leave it to the young ens. I wouldn't know how to get a ticket etc etc. All potential extra fans when you extend that across the city.
If we build that junkyard extention on the kop now as an easy fix, it will become a corpse in the stadium if we go down.
eugh, the Kop is hideous, and a business building in the corner is criminal. No thanks!
