Blades land deal with Italian sportswear giant
Posted on: Tue 03 Mar 2009

Sheffield United will be playing with Italian flair next season...

The Blades have signed a lucrative seven figure, four year deal with Italian sportswear manufacturer and designer Macron.

And the new kit and leisurewear supplier today revealed a prototype of next season's home shirt plus images of a special edition third shirt, which marks the anniversary of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the club and is free to renewing season ticket holders.

New Italian loan signing Arturo Lupoli was on hand to model the prototype home shirt which United say is work in progress.

Macron, who become the club's technical partners, offer expertise to a range of sports and football clubs on a worldwide basis. In Italy they are the official supplier to top flight teams Bologna and Cagliari, whilst in Portugal Boavista and Sporting Braga wear the brand. In the UK, Macron has a kit deal with League One Leeds United.

United's Chief Executive Jason Rockett said: "We are delighted to be working with Macron, a forward thinking company which places great importance on design and quality. They are well established in mainland Europe and clearly intend to be a force in the UK.

"Financially this is an excellent deal for United and is the successful outcome of long-term negotiations. The partnership with Macron is in line with our continued strategy of driving our off-the-field revenue streams."

Macron's Chief Executive Officer Gianluca Pavanello commented: "Macron is delighted to be working with Sheffield United one of the best known names in English football and from the city which gave birth to the game.

"We were impressed by the club's commitment to developing grassroots football and community initiatives, which mirror our own company beliefs. The opportunity to further our brand in line with Sheffield United's international partners in China, Australia and Hungary is also very exciting."

United have been working closely with Macron on the designs for next season's home and away kits. Macron helped the club develop its unique special edition third kit to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Blades which will see the names of every player to represent United woven into the fabric.

As it says in the quote, it's just a prototype, although if it does look anything like the one in the pic I don't mind it, as long as the quality of the shirt is better than we have had recently.

When I first read it I thought it said Macro, was ready to get my Macro card out and buy them in bulk for a discount!

Well nobody hates it yet :) (there's a poll up there ^ in case anyone hasn't noticed)

I have one request...please please please please can they make them in ladies sizes?

Normal ones are too baggy and kids ones don't really look in proportion.

Looks crap...............a polo shirt from Primark wi stripes on !

mind yer proto and the Italians know mens 'fashion' so at least the cut will be reight.

Might not be well suited to the more rotund of gentlemen though BB... you'll have to pass on the extra treacle pud in the suites ;)

I like it! It's got a collar... woo hoo!

Ahhh... but will it be starchy enough for the Cantona look? :D

According to RS this morning... we're back to the solid panels on the back :(

I don't like solid back panels but it looks OK from the front, I hope they sort the sponsor logo tho' I can hardly read it

A bit Athletico Madridish?

not sure about the maltese cross being bigger than the club badge. makes us look like St. John's Ambulance on a trip to the seaside

Not sure I like the idea of the badge being over two stripes as well...

It needs a modification or two for sure. The sponsor looks to have been incorporated into the shirt design, rather than the usual iron-on effort (that might just be the photo playing tricks), that needs to be lower on the shirt and the cross making smaller. The badge and maker name can then be lower on the shirt the badge position is a bit pants at the moment. I am also suspicious of the fact that they are only showing the shirt! What are they hiding??

Lupoli has no pants on, and is showing off his enormous penis.

I reckon our away kit might be all yellow. I don't know what I'm basing that on, though.

Thanks... I've had to try and keep a straight face in the office while reading that :D

I like it, traditional red and white stripes with no silly swirly bits all over it.

I might even get one. Speaking as someone who was going to treat himself to the last one (after not having one for a few years) but then I saw it.

Agree that the logo and badges could be lower.

I knew it would have a plain back because Sky said that's what it must be and what they say goes.

They cant do any worse than Le Coq Shitty.

Hopefully the sponsor will be incorporated into the shirt (like Avec did with the Wards logo) so it doesn't look like someone has just gaffer taped it to the front at the last minute.

I may actually get next seasons shirt. :)
