When the season starts and the squad is decided, is it time for us to give everyone a clean slate and forget about how the players have done before? There are still a few negative comments about the likes of Collins and Doyle being posted, but none of them have been linked with moves away from the club, so it seems we have to hope that they can be useful.

Unfortunately, Collins is wank. Doyle is wank. Being wank will attract negative comments. Any reduction in their wankness is extremely unlikely regardless of League and manager.

(Haven't done that much wanking since I was in my teens):p

I have more hope for Doyle, there must be some reason he was a regular in a promotion winning side.

Likewise for Collins - I've seen him look ok at times then throw it all away with some shocking errors.

Time will tell but they need to be out of the blocks quickly, likewise for Cressy et al.

Despite their horrific performances last year, they should be at the very least be ok at League 1 level. That goes for everyone in the squad frankly.

Not from me Bergs, Collins and Doyle are beyond hope. They represent everything that was and still is wrong with SUFC. Impossible to think of any positives about their almost certain presence in the side next term. Not their fault at all for earning a living and can see that booing them will achieve nowt, but that is what will happen from a very early stage of the season.

Same with Monty - who I think will still be available to play - certainly until last day of August when somat might happen. His wages are too high for anyone to take on imo - only hope is QPR. Any other side will only be able to take him on loan where we pay half his wages say. Very worrying - although I'd rather watch him for comedy value than Doyle.

They were rated massively by Leeds supporters in this league, so yes, clean slate for me.

That's not to say I'd prefer other players...

The pre-season reports so far have been saying that Doyle has been playing well in a 3 man midfield. I can't comment either way having not seen any.

But, yeah. I live in hope.

Hmmmmmmm. Difficult one. Interest post Bergen.

My opinion is that (similar to the Wilson situation) it will depend on performances and results. (As JD says) players will have to earn respect, but if we are sat in the top 6 after 10 matches I think most will be willing to forgive. That said if Collins, Cresswell, Doyle and the likes play like they did under Adams then fans will quickly slip back into hatred mode.

Collins and Doyle I fear may be tarred with the Adams brush. But Doyle played a role in Leeds promotion campaign from the 3rd division, so I do not see why he cannot win fans over. I have less faith in Collins, but he has some qualities (in the air and strength) so if paired with the right CB he may be able to do a job. He really needs to cut out the mistakes though, but the third tier may be his level. Cresswell soon shook off the piggy tag when he started banging them in (before he earned his lucrative contract). Again he just needs to find his goalscoring form. But if he does not I cannot see fans being patient.

I would have seen like to have seen these overpaid failures shipped out over the summer. But I will back them in August. That said after I have travelled to Oldham, Tranmere, Sheffield (a journey for me) and Yeovil if they put in similar performances to the games I saw last year (my last 5 games - Coventry at home then away at Ipswich, Palace, Portsmouth and QPR - won 0, Drawn 0, lost 5, for 0, conceded 13) then at the end of August my slate might be pretty dirty.

Happy with that, as long as it's not last season's performances and results. ;) I'm all for analysing critically, and won't hold back myself on what I'll watch next season.

Shall we have a sweep stake on the time of the first goal conceded?

Not sure our slate will be very clean for too long when the season starts for real - nothing in the defensive department fills me with anything but nerves and dread - apart from the Noslessness, which is the only small blessing I can think of.

you will not be there until September so how are you going to enforce that? :p Mope and moan more than you have been doing (if possible) ;)

Why assume it's the first game of the season... No they'll get the game that I see first ;)

Mope and moan? I've merely expressed my viewpoint, I haven't insulted or resorted to childish name calling, just continually reiterated my displeasure at a very poor appointment, an extremely slow summer and of course highlighted flaws and contradictions as I've seen fit. :)

I think I'm willing to give the outfielders more of a clean slate than Simmo tbh. Very little about his performances over 90mins for last season would seem to benefit from a fresh start and new coaching IMHO. He's a well established pro and can't have many chances left to show he's worth his wages.

Doyle and Collins should hopefully benefit from being more settled in the squad and maybe better coaching.

The main worry for me is the lack of confidence and vigour when attacking. Putting some power into attacks instead of cushioned headers and placed sidefooted shots. Objective one should be to take the back of the net out and take the keeper in with the ball. Subtle and deft touches are secondary measures.

le ds had no one else to put in for doyle or collins because bates kept his purse closed, le ds fans did'nt like either of them until they signed for us, now best comedy duo they know!

Regardless of whether Leeds were able to sign anyone else, they still did a good job for them at that level. I know my Leeds supporting mates were amused when we got them, as League 1 was their level.

Ok then Swiss, what about if the team wins it's first 7 or 8 games and then they do not play well in the first match you watch? (some time mid September I seem to remember)

There was no mention of childish name calling or insults, but you have been moaning a lot. I hope you will give it a bit of a rest when we meet for that pint (or real ale) you owe me!? It is put on a brave face whilst drinking lager (but do not tell Pinchy) or moan whilst I sup the amber nectar (apparently the Cricketers is opening and will have 4 Kelham Island beers on) but I am not having you bang on about Wilson being crap whilst you drink that fizzy shite!!?? :p

Thats a good point Ollie, Colchester will be the 9th game of the season (I don't count League cup games as you never see the full first team), so lets see what happens in the previous 8 before we get all giddy thinking about how I'll react.

The team is one thing, but there are certain individuals that don't deserve much of a chance and if they don't perform (given their records from last season) when/ if I see them play v Colchester then it'll be difficult to give them further chances.

You're right I owe you that pint, but as long as you're not blowing unjustified smoke up Wilson's arse when he's done nothing to deserve it then I won't have to bang on about Wilson being crap... Sadly, I think you'll also be banging on about how crap he is. ;)

Whether its moaning or whatever I guess its how you see it. I just call it how I see it.

I agree entirely. The time for tolerating, nay encouraging, plodding mediocrities who constantly give away the ball and routinely concede free-kicks and penalties, is long gone, isn't it? ... isn't it?

No it isn't! Already had plenty of 'Collins and Doyle have proven em sens in this division' comments. As for Monty, well I'm getting really worried he's going nowhere. Why would he want to leave and have to play football when he has the encouragement of plenty here who think running into people is the sign of a good midfielder.

(Thread bump)

13 years since the original post and we find ourselves in a similar situation. Mood not great after a disappointing relegation season, and it seems to me a few players are still judged based on the previous season, rather than what we see in pre season and what we think they can do in the season ahead.

Some unpopular players are already being slagged off based on what was a decent work out at York.

In 2011/12 Doyle and Collins went on to contribute well in a season which would surely have ended in promotion if events had been normal at the end of the season.

Let's give the current players - while they are here - a clean slate and assess their performances objectively. The coming season will be very different than last.

Can forgive players for not being good enough, none of them were really as a collective.

Can't forgive the few who's heads dropped, walked round with a face like a slapped arse, don't want to be here and clearly gave up.

But I don't think facial expressions from last season should influence assessments of 2024/25 match performances.
