As I said earlier, it is only 3 games in so no getting carried away just yet. The general consensus before the season started seemed to be that Wilder had recruited fairly well. I'd agree, although I'd say he did fairly well but only relative to the amount he was given, which so evidently wasn't going to be enough.

To provide a budget like that, you're either going to be starting out on a long term slow building plan a la Burton, Rotherham among other small teams to go up, or you're going to have to recruit in an incredibly intelligent manner. I had hopes that it would be the latter but the last few games says that unfortunately it won't be.

But to the main point, considering Wilder started out with a relatively clean template of a squad to add to, if all these new players do turn out not good enough - they're players on 2, 3 and 4 year deals, and it'll be the wait for these to run out again like it was with Clough. So there's another 2 to 3 years in League One if we haven't already been relegated by then.

Just thought I'd leave that with you all to brighten the mood.

We may yet see the full benefit from the new signings.

O'Connell, yesterdays howler aside looks to have the makings of a tough, commanding centre-half. He needs to be in the same back four as Jake Wright, an ex-captain with experience of marshalling the defence, which right now looks utterly out of sorts and disorganised.

Duffy gets into the right positions to whip the ball in, but needs serious practice in making them effective and not over-hit.

Hussey and Wilson? Well.....we may have dropped a bollock with those two.

Wasnt Clarke released by Oxford. Most of their fans felt he was not good enough for next league up? We needed an experienced leader at the back. The lad Greer on a one year deal would have been decent I felt. I think now I'd shift Basham to the back with O'Connell in the short term and put Wallace in at left back. We have to change the back line after that debacle.

Well the Oxford fans mainly seemed to give him some pretty glowing reviews from what I read, and given their bitterness over Wilder it seems that they don't dish out compliments frequently.

After last night, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable having Basham anywhere in a defensive position. He allowed himself to be bullied throughout the game. It was embarrassing to witness and summed up Uniteds utter gutlessness in recent times.

You are probably right. Just trying to think of anything! Going back to Basham, he is the weakest player for someone of decent size I have ever seen. Could not fight himself out of a paper bag. He seems to get smaller somehow when in contact and his headers go about a yard. He cannot register any power at all.

He's basically the Conor Sammon of the midfield.

Now that's a terrifying thought....

agree about giving Jake Wright a go. Was saying in another thread he might be what we need right now, supposed to be a bit of a leader.

It will be much easier to move these players on. Clough (and whoever dealt with the financials) wasted money on terrible value for money signings. They were also players on the way down who were supposed to excel at this level. It turned out they were all just fucking rubbish.

We haven't done that this time. We've placed an emphasis on value and signed players who've performed at this level. If, for whatever reason we can't get them to perform, others will.

He's a L2 player. He'll be Wilder's Woolford. Someone to tell him what the players are saying behind his back. Can't see him being good enough for this level however much of a leader he is.
But I can't remember ever seeing him play tbh. Can anyone on here say they've seen him play 90 minutes?

No I haven't seen him play either so I can't say whether he'll be good enough or not. But L2 player or not we've signed him and there's not a lot to lose at the moment in trying him. Just a thought anyway.

There's plenty to lose if he turns out to be crap though. Wilder's credibility for one.
If I was CW I'd be tempted to go to the board and say 'get me the players I want or I'm off' but I imagine he's earning more now than he's ever earned in his career and realistically, who'd want to throw that away?

could it actually get crapper?

if it carries on like this that could just be what he does to get himself out of the mess, whilst retaining his credibility and his never been sacked record.

Basically we've been shopping in the Bargain bin and we've ended up players that aren't magically going to propel us forward. They arn't bad but flawed or currently being used incorrectly

Hussey - good at crossing but can't defend at all (said that after 5 mins at stocksbridge)
o'connell - looks decent but young and we don't yet have a partner for him to help him eliminate mistakes
Duffy - l1 player of the year but not getting any younger and hasn't shown what he can do yet. Don't think tactics are helping him
Fleck - I like him as a player but has been bypassed in the middle so far.
Wilson - would have been a fine back up but don't think he was bought as first choice
Wright - old and couldn't get in a l2 side - bought for his character and to help in emergency I would have thought
Clarke - excellent at this level if used correctly but shown nothing at a higher level

Add to that long, done, basham and sharp falling short of even last years poor standards and we've got the current shit storm we see.

Wilder doesn't seem to fancy them but I'd be for whiteman, brooks, courts and mcnulty a chance.
