Former Blades clean-sheet record holding keeper, Mark Howard talks about

  • His admiration for Danny Wilson
  • His disdain for Nigel Adkins
  • The cup runs
  • The Bramall Lane atmosphere
  • And...that Christian Eriksen free kick

We brought this interview forward from Jan as the game has been called off with Preston. Today shall now be forever known as Mark Howard day!

Good interview, highlights the difference I suppose between the different characters and approaches of managers, Wilson honest, a man of his word, someone that players could trust, Clough, having the knowledge and experience to 'read' someone's emotional state and when they are ready to play/perform. Things something both managers obviously learned from personal experiences.

And then Adkins, a man that had read, and probably still does, every book available on man management and motivation, who tried to apply every trick, shortcut or latest fashionable quote/idea and amateurish psychological babble to a bunch of experienced, hard nosed, cynical, professional footballers

I think that's a spot on assessment

Superbly put.

One of the main gripes against Adkins was his self improvement, seminar style philosophy that he tried to impart at any given opportunity. His post-match audio clips on the BBC Sheffield site were usually about 15-20 minutes long whereas anyone other manager in the region needed 7-10 mins tops.

For me, there was always an air of condescension about him when he did enter enter into his motivational patter. Maybe he felt like he is/was imparting secret wisdom upon the masses when he's regurgitating Netflix TedTalks, making him part of an exclusive group called 'anyone with a internet connection'.

I find an awful lot of management speak in various industries as either an excuse or attempt to not actually tell the truth.

Mentioned previously my multiple warnings from senior managers about my repeated use of the word PROBLEM and how I should replace it with the alternate and less threatening ISSUE so that people who were responsible for the 'problem' wouldn't feel threatened or pressured.

Adkins ( yes you nailed it re Ted talks)! Has fallen into the trap that what works or motivates a set of people in X industry or situation, will work in Y industry, unaware that its not just a different industry but different people

I'll vouch for the guy with that free kick from Erikson, I sit behind the goal Row R and for all the world that free kick was going about 8ft over the bar then the spin on the ball took over and it dipped going in off the angle of bar and post, I was absolutely gob smacked, I have never seen a better free kick..

I was on G block of the south stand about a dozen rows from the pitch and it looked phenomenal from that angle. You just have to applaud when someone does that.

I was on the South Stand and the dip and swerve on that free kick was superb, and I still rate it as the best free kick I've ever seen.

In contrast to the Santos interview, this was really great. Really top bloke Mark Howard and I’m glad he is still playing.
