I was back in Sheffield for a business trip this week and it coincided with the Blades v Walsall game... conveniently. Our Contractor from Houston has a sub contract with a Sheffield firm

So I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to get to the lane, I’ve not been for a midweek game for quite some time due to work, probably 2008 was my last midweeker.

I asked the guys from Houston if they also wanted to get to the game, two of them did along with an Irish guy that I work with in Switzerland. Needed to get some pre match food so took them and my mates to London Road and the pre match crack started. They were swiftly handed a match programme and also a copy of Tuesday’s Star. Full of Chinese and Tsingtao beer by the time we left they were under no illusions that they were going to see Champions League football that they see on ESPN, they knew that this was ‘proper’ football.

We primed them on Bramall Lane, the history of football and the history of the Blades. Being American, they really appreciate anything with history as they just don’t have it there.

Because time was kicking on, we didn't chance to get a beer in the Cremorne/ Lion as we needed to get tickets. I got them tickets on the kop, then to the club shop, one of the lads bought himself a shirt and got photos in front of the big Blades Logos and the statues.

They absolutely loved the game, but really enjoyed the GCB, they obviously know John Denver, but couldn’t understand the link from John Denver to the Blades.

It was a shame in some ways that the game was crap, but they saw a goal at the kop end and loved how the tackles were flying in at times.

Post match we went back to the Golden lion, which again they thought was great. They have nothing like that in Houston.

The lad that bought the Blades shirt is now a Blade and has said he’ll follow us on Facebook!

Despite us being in League 3 we can still impress people as a Club!

Cheers Sheff de party and Blackheath Blade

It sounds sad but it gave me an enormous sense of pride that they were actually interested in my football team and home city.

And actually they gave a very neutral view of the game as well. Basically saying that Sheffield (had to correct them a few times that we are Sheffield United or the Blades) kept the possession way better than Walsall.

And they loved my explanation about Wednesday and calling them the pigs. Especially when I explained the lyrics to "Swinging a pig" :)
